Hi and thanks in advance for any help with sleuthing.

My motor is a 1984 (J140TLCRD). Local seller has a lower unit from a 1979 115hp, but does not have the model # from the original motor.

Is there a way of diagnosing whether this will fit my motor?

Forgive me if this info has already been covered - I've been on the search function all week and I have to figure this out before I leave town tomorrow.

Many thanks.

Simply look at the shift rods on both units. If they look the same at the top where they connect then you're set. If the replacement is different then it could be older than he thinks and may not work.

Hi - thanks so much.. I did look at several of these amazing "parts websites", but don't feel I have the definitive answer.

After literally days of doing that I was hoping that someone who really knows these models could offer some qualititive input,

e.g. "As long as it's a '79 you're ok, but if it's a '78 it wouldn't work"

OR

"As long as it's a 20" model built between 1976 and 1986 you're OK"

The service shop I spoke to yesterday said "probably"...

... but according to the insanely thorough website at sterndrive.info, my outer case is a misfit - the top part looks like the '2 and 3 cylinder loop style from 1989 to 2005" (has the "eye tooth" hanging down from the cav plate) - but it also has the (don't know the term) "anode slot" next to the six upper holes".

Back of unit is straight down rather than sloped, and there are four internal water intake screens on the sides.

No skeg so can't compare that.

Of course, that's just the outer casing I'm describing. Perhaps it's had previous Franken-grafts.

Thanks again.

Hi - I haven't removed my lower unit yet, and this guy doesn't seem too interested in presenting much except a vague description and a craigslist picture (then again, it looks uber-clean and it's $200) - so I'm having to try and sleuth this way.

Very grateful for the help! :)
