I have a 1973 Evinrude 85 HP model 85393m. there are actually pretty low hours on this boat as it sat for a number of years until a couple of years ago. Well it's extremely hard starting, I have to choke it and crank for a long time, like a couple of minutes and it will start to fire and then eventually run fine. It seems it isn't getting gas. I cleaned both carbs, replaced gaskets and jets and such. But I'm pretty sure it's a fuel flow problem, I can prime the bulb and crank on choke for like 30 seconds or more and then pull the plugs and they are dry. Now once it is started, I can run all over the lake full throttle half throttle, and even slow and it keeps running fine, now dog down in power but if I shut it down for a good 10 or 15 minutes it won't restart without a lot of cranking again.
So I'm thinking fuel pump? But would it run good once started if the pump was bad. I've tried different gas tanks, and even put on a new fuel line/ primer. Plus pumps seem to be spendy, like $100 bucks, is there anyone that has a reasonable price on these.
All the gas lines are good, no dry rot, clamps are in place and snug. I suppose I could take the line off the pump that goes to the motor and see if there is a vacuum on that while cranking.
Any thoughts, tips, etc? I would really appreciate it, and my family would like to get out on the water again. Thank you
