I have an old 9.5 Johnson outboard, not sure which year but think 60s or 70s (any good way to find out?). Went to use it today, backed out just fine, but when I switched to forward I got nothing. I popped the top off and looked at the cable up at the top near the shifting switch, it appeard to be lifting when I shifted into forward, but still nothing. I don't really know anything about fixing outboards. If I knew which year it was I could buy a manual off here. Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks for any help!

If the cable has stretched, it will not shift into forward.

You need to disconnect the cable and shift by hand to verify forward gear is working. Have someone rotate the prop(motor OFF) while you select gears and neutral.

Some adjustment may be available however a new cable would be the best solution if yours is indeed stretched.

Does it still shift to both reverse and forward or is that gone too? I'm suspecting a broken shear pin. Or the last guy that went in to replace the water pump stripped the threads out of the shift rod connector and the bolt has now fallen out.

It still runs in reverse fine, just not forward. Is the shear pin by the prop? There is also a threaded hole near the shifter cable at the top that has no bolt or anything in it. Is something suppose to go there?

I will try shifting manually and see if it is just over stretched. Is there somewhere online to look up local dealers for that stuff? Or just do a search online or go to a local boat dealer? Thanks for your replies.
