Re: 70 Mercury Outboard

Is it a 70 hp or is the year it was made 1970? not exactly sure on what you mean by "was stuck then pulled in". If you move the lever back and forth, and the cable does not move, the problem is either in your control box or the cable broke..If the cable moves, the problem is in the lower unit. check the linkage and the shift shaft first. If they are ok, you will have to pull the lower unit. A merc manual will be a godsend if you need take the lower apart. If by stuck and pulled in you mean you got stuck I.E. bottomed out and had to be towed in, You could have torn up the prop/hub or snapped the shear pin that holds the prop on if your lower unit has that type of set up. Not sure which type you have. The good news is, if it is the prop/hub or shear pin, you won't have to pull the lower unit. Good luck. Frank:

frank, its a 70 hp force mercury marine engine. i was in 32 feet of water when problem accrued at bay bridge in md. i flagged some one down and they towed us in.i didn't hit anything and when i got home i checked both cables and they are connected and they move when i put throttle in rev and forward. i can spin the prop when engaged?? is that correct or should it be tight when engaged?thanks steve

It could be a spun hub in the Prop. I had one do that,it would pull in reverse but not forward.
