I just bought a boat with a 6hp Sea Horse engine on it. I am new to outboard motors and need some help. The model number is 6R79E. I am assuming that it was made in 1979. Can any other details be given about this motor?

Also, the guy I bought it off of said it started easy but it would not "spit" any water out and it needed an impeller. Can anyone give me more info on this as far as what may be the problem, where to get parts, how hard to fix? Where can I find an owners manuel for this motor?

Thanks for any assistance!!

Yes it is a 1979

Owners manual can be purchased from this site or on ebay and a few other places on line.

Impeller it the main part of the water pump. Do not run the motor without this working properly or you can do major damage from over heating. Not hard to change if you are comfortable with basic mechanical repairs.

That is an excellent question that hardly ever gets asked. What you really should do is take it apart and examine it to see what it needs before buying or ordering parts. That makes sure you buy what is needed and only what is needed.

Yeah, I know, that also means it will sit around for a week before you get it back together. So be it.

Re: 6hp Sea Horse help

I installed the water pump repair kit. I believe that the water pump housing may have been the problem.

Next question. Where are the points that I need to change the oils on this motor, with what oil, and how much?

Thanks again!!

Get a factory service manual - it will give you all of the lube points, recommended frequencies and lube types.

One area to be especially careful to keep lubed is the shift handle. It has very small grease passages in it and clogs easily, if old grease is allowed to harden. If that happens and the handle begins to bind, you will have to pull the powerhead to get at the handle link, inside of the midsection.

Pulling the powerhead is not all that difficult, but the bolts that hold it to the pan and midsection sometimes break. They can be a pain to get out.
