Ok got the top off whew lots of staples but gotta love the dremel! Now for the transom I'm not sure why this guy had stainless placed on both sides of the transom. It is in perfect condition...... Ok so I woke up from that dream and heres what I found LOL. Let me add that I also stated earlier in my post " TRANSOM SEEMS SOLID NO FLEXING AND DOESN'T MOVE". Check the pics do your core samples and enough said!!!!

Your progress is looking good. You can certainly see how popping the cap is the way to go. Nice transom :p I also removed most of mine with a shop vac.

Would be nice if it was all mulch lol one side and near the bottom are a little more firm so just a bit more work. I didn't cut any of that fiberglass out. I think at some point it cracked and the person cut most of the inside out of it. The only glass left is about 3in's on each side. I'll be removing the rest of that because it looks really shotty. I'm also gonna pull that floor to make it easier to get at the rest of the transom.

I have a 60,s Mustang that i started too long ago and still not finished . I haven't touched in 9 months.I plan on glue to join cap to hull maybe 5200 3m.My boat hull looks the same but it had balsa core and moulded seat boxes that acted as air box for floation plus one under bow for floation. No foam but rotten balsa and transom ply.
My transom was curved and i goofed and made it flat. Be careful not to loose the shape of the hull when striped very thin.
Mark
PS My boat came from canbar marine company division of Canada barrels & keg ltd. In Waterloo Ontario

Just an update on my progress and some new pics!

What do you guys reccomend here? Should I cut the stringers back (They are all fiberglass NO WOOD.) If I do cut them back should I rebuild and put in a bilge area? Just glass over the bad spots to reinforce?

I don't think I've seen so many stringers in one boat...wow. It won't break, thats for sure.

Re: 196? Crestliner Mustang? Resto begins Help needed

Alright good day today! I removed both sides of the rubrail and got the windsheild off in one piece. Most staples came out with the rubrail lol still have a few to go. I now have to make a engine stand so I can get that outta the way. Questions so far.
1. Good way to straighten the rubrail out?
2. How hard is it to disassemble the steering cable from the engine?

3. What did you guys use to put the boat back together? (rivets?)

hi bud.....
ok....im not sure what kind of boat hull joint you have..there is two types in that era......one, the most common is called the shoe box joint......the other is a flange joint......flange joints are a pita.

as far as screws or rivets......lol....its kinda both.....
if the rub rail hides the screw heads and there is room beneath the rubber part....then screws will do.....if not......
place the rub rain on.....screw it into place with the existing holes......then after the cap is fully in place.....remove one screw and rivit it in.....then the next screw....and so on....

4. Did you repair the spots where the staples came out?

need pics.......but if the area is hidden well.....then no.

5. The floor that's down now is very thin about 1/8" thick. When I remove this what do I put down in it's place?

if you keep the current crazy stringer configuration (cut the top off one and look inside......(there is something inside there to give it that shape,....if its rot....just scrape out the rot and keep the shape.)

1/4 inch should be fine....(with glass over and under it).....the closeness of the stringers will give the deck enough support...

if there is wood under those things.....replace the system.....and use a well glassed 1/2 inch piece.

(if you replace the system.....(i suggest not to..) then pm me for possible other remidies and configurations)

hope that helps.....
cheers

Re: 196? Crestliner Mustang? Resto begins Help needed

ok bud........i kinda figured there was foam in side the stringers.

now.....this is your boat....you can build it however you want.

some guys would cut them all out and go with a traditonal 3 stringer config....

i wouldnt....

a general rule of thumb is to repair/replace what was there.

now.....a quick easy way to fix that is to rip off the tops in the way i described....scrape out the wet foam and just re foam it......then using the 1708, wrap the stringers again....when you do....think I beam.

when they made that boat....my guess is that they just layed strips of foam on the hull....and glassed over them with matt/roving.

dont get anal about removing every speck of foam....just dig out the wet stuff......

each stringer will take you approx 2 hrs....so that is a full days job just to clean that stuff out.

pm me when you decide or get them dug bud.

cheers

Re: 196? Crestliner Mustang? Resto begins Help needed

Alright just a small update. I've removed most of the glue on the sides via grinder and cut the stringers back a bit to allow easier access to the transom. I prepped the transom surface and I'm getting very close to putting the new transom in. I cut the new transom pieces out and I'm in the process of putting the two pieces together. I did make up some of Ooops super duper PB to fill some spots on the transom skin and the new transom had a few spots that needed filler. I ran outta time to put it together but I'll get that done this week! The poly resin didn't smell as bad as I was expecting. I've worked in industrial wastewater treatment for 15 years and have smelled worse things LOL.
I do have a couple questions.
1. I have cabosil, 1/4 chopped strand and 3m glass bubbles. If I'm just filling surface stuff do I need the 1/4 csm in there? (I'll use it when filling the spots around the transom and filleting.)
2. If you look back at the pics I've posted you can see 3 drains. Garboard, transom and one more that use to drain the floor area. I'm thinking about building a bilge area now that I have that section cut out. Do I still need that deck drain? kinda seems pointless now?

Ok on to the pics I built a motor stand using the instrucions on iboats. Came out nice and sturdy. I haven't put the castors on yet but I have them and will.

Forgot to go out and take a few of the hull but I'll get those in the next update. Hopefully the transom will be in!

Re: 196? Crestliner Mustang? Resto begins Help needed

Well the transom halves are now joined as one. I hope I did it right LOL! I followed Ooops advice and applied resin to one side of the transom then added 2 layers of 1.5 csm a coat of resin on the other side and put it together like a sandwich. I was using the resin with 1.5% MEKP mix. I thought this was a little fast and found after the bucket reads 1% mix. Oh well I'll find out tomorrow when I try to pry it apart LOL. Here's more pics for your viewing entertainment.
Transom skin used some PB mix to fill some nicks and gouges I made while removing the wood.

What's the plan to tie the stringers into the transom?

Re: 196? Crestliner Mustang? Resto begins Help needed

Not a clue LOL! I was going to throw that out for suggestion after the transom was in. I would imagine I could build wood or foam blocks and extend them to the transom and tie it all together. Then glass over over whatever I used to tie it in. We'll see what it looks like when I get the transom in. Did some more prep on the skin today and I should have the transom in tomorrow or Thurs. weather permitting. :D

Re: 196? Crestliner Mustang? Resto begins Help needed

Alrighty then........... I now have a layer of 1.5oz CSM on the backside of the transom. Last step before mating it to the skin. I had to remove the hidden foam in the stringers first so I could hose them out and get ready for the new foam. Next step is installing the transom! Here's some pics of the work so far.
2 Coats of resin to soak in before adding the CSM.
Holes002.jpg

Holes001.jpg

Then a layer of CSM
Holes005.jpg

Holes003.jpg

A few holes in the stringers to remove the old foam. This will also be where I add the new foam so it works out well.
Holes006.jpg

Holes007.jpg

I'll need to make a few more holes in one of the stringers so I can get the foam poured and spread evenly!
All for now enjoy!
