Hello all, new member here. I have a couple questions about some starter issues. Here goes.

Motor#1 '79 Evinrude 35hp
The motor starts fine with pull start and elec. start and everything works well. However I was doing a test drive with the hood off and I noticed that at WOT the starter gear/bendix can rattle up and hit the flywheel throwing sparks. OUCH! The return spring is there. The gear is not sticking up, it just barely rattles up, everthing seems to be moving well. Perhaps a stronger spring? What to do?

Motor#2 '76 Evinrude 25hp
The elec. start does not work. The solenoid just clicks. Bad ground? Also exactly what parts/wiring needs to be there to charge the battery?

Re: Elec. Starter woes

As for your first question.Use some lubricant on the bendix shaft of your starter. That will take care of that one.
Your second problem can be solved by making sure that the battery is charged and all the connections are clean. You can bypass the solenoid by attaching jumper cables to your starter, just to make sure that there is no problem with the starter.
