After reading all the posts about proper flywheel torque I want to re-torque mine but don't have the spanner wrench. Is there an acceptable alternate or is it possible to make something that will do the job as well?

Re: flywheel torque

A proper torque wrench is the only correct way to do the job.

Rocky, You need a 1/2" drive torque wrench, the proper size socket and some way to hold the flywheel. I have jammed a heavy screwdriver into the ring gear to hold the flywheel. A strap or Stilson wrench is much better.

Oh, are you talking about the wrench to keep the flywheel from spinning? I leave the back bolt from the recoil starter in and wedge a small piece of wood (like a 1x2) between the bolt and the flywheel teeth. Holds flywheel still and if anything breaks it will be the piece of wood.

Jamming a screwdriver, or whatever between the flywheel, and starter is a good way to undo what ever repair you are trying to make. Go to an auto store, and ask for a flywheel wrench. It is used in auto work when adjusting valves when engine is on repair stand, or for turning the engine over for what ever reason. Snap-On makes one of the best, but other's will do. Have the dealer check his K-D catalog.

My late great uncle had one of those, made in the shop...piece of 2X5 and an old leather belt...called it the brother wrench. His brother unknowingly contributed the belt.

You can get a good flywheel turner for <$30 from NAPA.
