96 Force stator issues

I decided to start a new thread on the topic of stators. (Old thread 96 Force wont start). I went to my local Marine shop for advice on removing the Flywheel to get to the stator and also asked for a price on a new stator. He said it comes as a kit which includes the new "Red" stator, new regulator and I believe he said module. I was still stunned by the price he had quoted, "$500." So my question is ..What has to be replaced if I change to the new Red stator and why? I just replaced the regulator.

Re: 96 Force stator issues

To further the issues I have with this topic, I looked up in Iboats parts for a new stator and there is a selection for a 9 amp and 16 amp stator. which is the correct item. The engine # is OE179573 and 9 and 16 is listed for that sequence. How would I determine which one I have?

Yes that price is shocking. I suspect that the only way you can tell is to look at the P/N that is on you stator. I believe there is a specific rectifier/regulator assy that you should be using if you have the 16 AMP version. I think it's P/N 194-5279

174-2075K1 (9 amp) & 174-2075K2 (16 amp) Stators:

These two stators are identical, except for the battery charging output. If you have a voltage regulator with "5279" in the part number, you can use 174-2075K2. If you only have a rectifier, you'll need to use 174-2075K1, unless you upgrade the rectifier to a CDI #194-5279 regulator then you can use 174-2975K2. Note: These stators should only be used with CDM modules. If you have a switch box, use 174-8778K1 or 174-9710K1 instead.

Re: 96 Force stator issues

thanks for the replies. i have a 96 force 120hp oe179573. the original stator #398-9873a22 which i believe is a 16 amp. I had replaced thr reg/rec w/ #893640-003 2346 printed on it. seemed to have misplaced the reciept. the volt meter was reading 16v at 5000 rpm. the circuit bd had red bloches on it which according to what i read was an indication of reg/rec issues. i assume that I recieved the correct rectifier when I purchased it an gave the engine #. Now i see there is a 9 amp an 16 amp stator system so am not sure if i have the right reg.

search "96 Force 120 wont start" for more details.

Re: 96 Force stator issues

From your part numbers, it appear that you have the 16 amp charging system so your rectifier/regulator is the correct one.

Thanks for the confirmation. I was thrown off by the marine shops indication that I needed a "kit" for $500. I will only get the stator. If it is not a significant amount more, otherwise I will order it through Iboats. I truly appreciate you help.

Re: 96 Force stator issues

I'm up and running. Went to Marine Shop this morning and picked up a new/used stator. It was "like new" but used. He said it was part of a kit that used the other components but not the stator. For $100 how could I go wrong. Checked the resistance against brand new out of the box and it was dead on around 650. The part number was slightly different but I was assured it would be fine. Part #398-832975-a11. Engine is running fine. Hopefully this is it. Thanks to all who responded to the thread. Your help and assurance is greatly appreciated.
