I have a 1985 70hp Johnson that stays in foward gear no matter what you do with the shifter. how major of a job is this to fix? All linkage moves as should.

Re: Hung in foward

Are you sure all linkaged are moving? Is the shift rod connected to the shift linkage? There is a disconnect where the shift rod connects, located under the bottom carburetor. If you look under the bottom cowling while shifting you should be able to see the shift rod moving where it exits the cowling and enters the swivel bracket.

If the shift rod is confirmed to be moving, then the problem is in the lower unit and would require partial to complete disassembly to take care of it. Maybe you'll get lucky and find the shift rod wasn't threaded in all the way and simply pulled out of the unit...

I have a 72 johnson, and don't know how different they would be, but I accidently removed the pivot screw in the bottom of the motor, and mine got stuck in reverse. You can check the linkage at the top before it enters the lower unit and may also have a small plate on the side of the lowerunit to check the linkage .. if you still dont find the problem, if yours is designed the same, you can pull the bottom half of the bullet and adjust it properly fairly easy with no special tools.

I have this same problem with my 40hp, can't get the shifter rod to come up, I can tap it down to engage and pull it up into neutral but not up into reverse, what would I look for in the lower unit? Lower unit oil was white.
