Ive read posts about other people with thte same problem as me. the down button works but the other 2 up ones do not. does anyone have the same engine? i have a solenoid on the pump which is the down solenoid and the other one is on the opposite side of the engine am i correct on the one on the opposite side or is that a solenoid to something else? Also how do i test to see if that solenoid is funtional?

If you have this type, the solenoid is for the "up" circuit, motor will draw more current up, down switch just operates the motor down circuit.
bottom button is down
middle is trim limit
middle and top together is trailer

mine looks like that except i got a solenoid attached to it and then one on the opposide of the motor attach to the block, the one on the pump seems to be the down one, do you know how i check the one by it's self to see if it's the problem or the pump?

Re: 165hp mercruiser 1970 Trim problem

I had the same problem some years ago. It turned out to be the three button switch. "Down" would work fine, "trailer mode" (two buttons at same time) worked fine, but the "up" trim switch does not work anymore. For awhile, I just used the two switches to trim up. I eventually bypassed the the faulty switch and put a toggle switch on my dash to trim it up. Has worked fine for years.

I've just had to bypass my three button controller as well...

If its the three button trim controller the power to the system goes into the bottom button (down) then jumps to the middle button powering the "trim" function. When this button is depressed it powers the trim pump thru the limit switch as well as passing power (only when pressed) to the "trailer" button. If the middle button is bad then the top button is not getting power. Try jumping from the bottom power in to the top power in and see if the trailer button gives you up.

I didn't mean to push both buttons, you'll have to pull the plate the buttons are mounted to and physically jump the power lead from the bottom power in line to the power in side of the top button on the back side. Careful, a shorted wire can get hot in a hurry...
