VP AQ151 automotive equivalent

Well, just picked up my first boat last weekend from Valdez. It's in great shape and well worth what I paid for it. It has twin VP engines which the marine survey calls 250 A/SP which I beleive are the AQ151 engines. They both run fine however one oil pan has a rust pin hole and the other pan is rusting but not yet leaking. I'm going to pull the engines next spring and replace or repair the pans as well as perform some of the other routine maintenance while I've got the engines up. My questions(I asked this question last week but was mistaken as to the engine type): Is there an automotive equivalent to these AQ151 engines? I'd like to be able to find a couple pans from the wrecking yard and buy the appropriate pan gaskets from the parts store.

While I have the engines out I plan on replacing the timing belts and servicing the raw water pump and just basically clean things up. Are these timing belts marine specific or will an automotive belt work?

If the exhaust and drive shaft bellows...and the raw water "S" hose look fine and are still flexible should they be replaced anyway? I don't know how long they've been on but from what I can see they look fine.

Thanks for your help
Kirk

Re: VP AQ151 automotive equivalent

I believe the your engine uses the B230 block in which case a 1984 or so, Volvo 740, 2.3 litre would be the car equivalent. Best way is to take the old pan to the junkyard with you and make sure it is the same. I replaced my pan with one from a junkyard.

Yes you can use an automotive timing belt. Make sure the drive pulleys/gears are free from corrosion or it will eat your belt up in no time.

Yes you should change the drive bellows at the very least. Might as well do the exhaust and the S hose. This way you know they are good and your boat will not sink due to a drive bellows failure. Cheap insurance.

Have a great day

Rob.
