I bought a 1956 gale,Since then I rebuilt the carburator, cleaned the points, changed the gas pump and foot.I put it in the water and it dosen t do more than 2miles\hr.i brought it to 3 mechanics and they all said the pitch of the propeller.I ve changed that 3 times and still no difference.Nobody has an idea,or what the pitch of the propeller is supposed to be.Why isn t it going any faster?

Re: 1956 gale

What model is it? Some had rubber shock absorbers in the prop hub which well eventually break down and cause the prop to slip and not turn with the shaft.

You did pull in the anchor, right? Hey, just kidding.

But seriously, you need to clarify the question/problem.

How big is this motor? Since it has a fuel pump, we know it is bigger than a 3hp.

Is the motor racing and not going anywhere like spinning your wheels on the ice? That would be a spun propeller hub (or broken shear pin). But a 5hp doesn't have a rubber propeller hub. 12hp -up does.

OR...is it just doggy and won't rev up like you aren't giving it enough throttle? Well maybe you aren't. Check to see that the linkage does indeed open 'er up.

However, I'm guessing that it is running on one cylinder. That is the cause of 99% of no-power problems.

One last comment--if it is a 5hp with full FNR gearshift, and it very tight to crank and turn over, that is a broken shock absorber in the lower unit.

Prop pitch???? Either you mis-understood what they told you, or nuts and phooey. No way.

its a 25 hp,and I have 3 propellers and one is brand new from last year. They checked to see if the rubber was ok on all 3 and it didn t move. The pitch they were talking about was the numbers on the propeller. They said that it has to be a certain size and a specific pitch which they didn t know because of the year. And yes the anchor was pulled. Both cylinders had 130psi

25hp, huh? and only 2mph. Something is seriously wrong with this picture. You still haven't answered the basic question: Is it racing/slipping or not? I don't care what you have on there for diameter or pitch, it will not make such a dramatic effect as only 2mph.

I still suspect one cylinder.

OR....or you have it on a houseboat or something. You haven't told us that either.

it dosen t seem to skip and its on a 14 foot fishing boat. The 2 cylinders have 130 psi like I said before. And fot the pitch,it was the mechanics that told me to find out the proper pitch for that motor and that that could be the cause.I have no idea and thats why i m asking

Forget prop pitch. Either you misunderstood or you were talking to people who hadn't a clue.

I suspect that the throttle control is not connected or is broke and the carb is staying in the idle position.

and the cable is good, when I move it forward it goes all the way to fast on the engine and when I pull it back it goes right to slow. That seems to be working alright

I'm sorry, you are not listening. I didn't say it was "skipping", I said it is running on one cylinder. They will run just fine on one, nice and smooth. Just no power.

What you should do is prove my theory right or wrong. Disconnect and ground one spark plug wire. Now see how it runs. Then reconnect that wire and do the same with the other one. If I am guessing correctly, it will make no difference with one grounded, but won't run at all with the other one grounded. That is the good one.

The next project is to see what is wrong with the bad one.
