johnson lower unit O ring under shaft spline

Will I mess anything up not having this O ring under the 4 spline on the top of the drive shaft? I had the outdrive off 3 times yesterday, and the last time, well, I hope it's the last time. Besides, my wife "helped me" be cleaning that particular garbage out of the boat. HOW NICE!

The o-ring keeps water out of the splines. You'd be OK for awhile if the splines were greased well, but eventually the splines will rust into the crank. That would be bad.....

Thanks for the imput. My wife remembered where she put the O ring, so I am going to get a 1/2 dozen of the same size for every time I have to take her apart. (The boat, not the wife, for I wouldn't understand how THAT works!) I did however, load it up with SIL-GLIDE white grease. Would anti-seize be better? Sure is messier!

O ring is in, now my wire harness is frying. "The Flying Dutchmen" didn't have the bad luck I do.
