Just took my 73 SRV Sea Ray to the lake this weekend after installing new water pump starter harmonic balancer belts valve cover gasket and plugs wires, also the carb was rebuilt....

The boat starts and cruises below 2k rpm great and the temp needle stays below half warm...

As soon as i throttle up over 3k the needle sweeps to the red...

Any ideas?

Its a 4.1L inline 6 with mercruiser stern drive...

T-stat frozen half closed? Heat exchanger clogged? The Doctur gave the rest.

Are the belts tight?

(in addition to the other responses, of course)

alright did a large shakedown last night.....not clogged riser belts tight...i found my problem....the water inlet hose that runs next to the exhaust and shift bellows has a hole the size of a thumbnail in it. : ( i think its iver my skill level to fix....guess i better break the wallet out and take it to a repair shop

Question: when your temp gauge would rise, was the needle steady and how fast did it come down? I noticed the other day on mine where with higher rpms the gauge needle went up but was a little shakey and as rpms came down, it immediately came back to normal without delay. After seeing your post, I checked my connection on the sender and it appeared loose, but I'll test it today at the lake to see how it responds. What was the behavior of your needle on the gauge?

it was very steady...temp would decrese when motor was below 2k rpms...or at idle
