My daughter works for Maersk Lines and sent these pictures to me of the life boat that Capt Phillips was held on by Somali Pirates until Navy snipers killed them.
The boat came though the Port of Charleston and was loaded on a flatbed trailer for transport to a Naval Seals Museum in Fl.

In the last picture you can see bullet holes just above the hatch...

This better?

Still have to scoll a little to see it all. It even stretches the text out. 640 x 480 is best. You can set that in the 'reduce to' box at the bottom of the photobucket upload box then afterwards everything you post will automatically be a good size for all computer screens.

Doing so, however, won't resize pictures you've already done at a larger size. Photobucket may allow you to individually resize pictures or you could delete them, reupload them, then repaste to iboats.

Amazing pictures for sure, but some curiosities. How'd did they get a shot at the back of the boat considering it was being towed?

Also why so many holes below the back window. I thought it was 'one shot', 'one man'? That would have been a total of three shots and only one of them was inside the boat. The other two shots would not have likely even hit the boat itself. It would also seem unlikely that they would 'sprayed' the boat, just in case, as they would have been concerned about hitting the captive captain.

Notice that boat has a capacity of 28 persons. Also note the lack of any visible source of decent ventilation for that sardine can. Yuck!

What a strange looking lifeboat indeed!

Not sure I would want to be couped up inside that thing!

We teach motor lifeboat handling and gravity davit operation at USMMA. I spent several days onboard a very similar model. Not built for comfort or speed, but bouyant, self-righting and weathertight. A little eerie below if you are not at the helm looking out one of the ports. They only carry enough fuel for appx. 25-100 nm luckily or the pirates may of motored all the way to the coast.

It was sitting on the trailer at the port (notice the BTT guy standing on the back of the trailer). The person taking the pictures was walking around it.

As far as the shots taken I wasn't there when it happened, all we know is the result. You will have to answer or assume these questions yourself.

I believe that the crew of the Maersk Alabama was 15.

Also, note that there is a large hatch on the bow and that along with the hatch in the stern would have provided ventilation. These lifeboats are just that LIFE boats and are a hell of a lot better than the old open boats slung on davits on the side of ships. In a rough, ice cold storm, this boat is the choice for survival. This type of boat is also used on the open water drilling platforms.

I will resize the pictures for the last time, they are currently sized for a 15" screen and fit mine well.

You could assume that these expert marxmen fired a synchronized precision first shot, follow up with a 3 or 4 round burst to be sure. Check out the amazingingly tight pattern of the burst.

The goal, of course, was to disable the pirates and make sure they stayed disabled while limiting the risk to Captain Phillips. The goal was met.

I don't know if you've ever known any real Navy Seals. There's tons of phonies around. You can usually smell the BS. A real Seal will be strong, quiet, and always at least 3 moves ahead of you. He has no need to boast.

WOW! That is one awesome life boat! I didn't know they made them like that! Would likely be less than pleasing being in the belly of it, but I'd never fear for my life inside it. Heck, even the prop has a shield around it. Add a topedo tube and it's a tank on water :)

If a ship sunk and the waves were 30' high with strong heavy winds and rain, and freezing waters, Ya thats the boat I would want to be in, a floating bubble. Cool pics dude!!

For those who would like to see more information on this type of lifeboat here is a link to a book on google giving the requirements starting on page 196 (IIRC).

http://tinyurl.com/q6rv63

The regulations for these are covered under SOLAS (Safety Of Life At Sea) begining in 1974 and amended over the years.

Big Hooptie, yep that's a good one, and looking at the back of that tractor I'd say it's a nice ride. More than likely a Petercar, I like the inverted spoiler too. One thing about Maersk Line is that they always had the best equipment, I hauled a lot of those containers in the 70's, 80's and 90's. (When I didn't have a boat to run in the winter I drove trucks over the road). BTT= Bridge Terminal Transport which is a Maersk Line trucking company of owner operators and all the trucks that I've seen are top notch.

I wonder how much one of those boats (used one) would cost. I would love to spend a couple of years making it into a houseboat. You would never have to leave the lake because of weather. Put a generator on top and have all the comforts of home...I want one
