Oil Reservoir Tank wont quit filling

I have a 1987 yamaha 115 outboard. The reservoir tank seems to continually fill even though the float is all the way up and the tank is full. It will actually push the cap out and overflow oil into the motor housing. Not fun when this happens on the lake and i have to continually add oil. Wiring seems okay. There are 4 wires coming out of the sensor, black, red, white, brown. A second red attaches to a pink wire which splits to the back of the motor and i guess grounds out to a little plug that slides into the motor above the spark plugs. Those also have a black wire attached aswell. The lights and buzzer work through the whole motion of the sensor, it just seems that something is not telling the sensor to turn off when the tank is full. Any thoughts.

Check to see if there a manual bypass switch to fill the tank in case the float switch fails to operate the transfer pump on this motor and that it is funtioning correctly also

I think I have read some where that a low voltage condition might cause the pump to run

check your battery voltage... yammi's oil pump from your reserve tank to the main tank on the motor are controlled by grounding.. If the battery gets under 10.5 volts they auto ground and continue to pump...
Had that problem with my 93 115 last summer. My regulator wire for the charging system was broken in two

hope this helps

Re: Oil Reservoir Tank wont quit filling

I have read a lot of the old post on precision blend topic and i think i have the process down. I have a yamaha 115ETLH which is an 87 engine. I have a problem where the switch on the remote tank under the center console will not turn off. I have checked the oil sensor on the motor in the main tank and the float moves back and forth fine, does not get stuck. The guage on the tach works where it changes colors through the whole movement of the float.

The color of the wires on the oil sensor are red, black, brown, and white. I have disconnected the sensor and jumped the white to black wire and turned the key to the on position. the switch continues to run and pump oil. I then grounded the white to the main negative block incase the black wasnt grounded and the switch still ran. I have looked over the whole harness and cannot see anywhere where the blue wire could be grounded. I followed it all the way to the motor and it is no where grounded and ends in the oil control unit. I read that if the black wire is connected to the blue or white wire on the sending unit then there is nothing wrong with the unit itself. According to the manual it should be a faulty oil control unit.

All the wiring seems correct, i talked to the old owners and they said that this problem has been happening for some time and that there mechanic has never really figured it out.

Am i missing anything or any other tests that could help before purchasing a part. Not sure if i need to be looking at the guages at all. Any more help would be great, thanks, if i need to add anything just let me know.

Oh yeah, its not low voltage because i am getting 11.25 volts from both batteries. Once the key is turned on the oil switch in the remote tank turns on and starts pumping and never stops. This makes sense to why it seems to run rough every now and then. Not to mention the owners mechanic put in the wrong plugs and the gap was way off.

ok, I am gonna place a trainee behind the keyboard.
stand by. :)
if your oil control module is original, then undplug engine oil tank from harness. check black wire, engine side harness to ground with ohm meter. if ground is good, turn key on. on the engine side of harness jump black to brown, pump should come on. next jump black to white & pump should turn off. next jump black to red, alarm should sound as well as 3 bars flashing on the tack. to reset alarm turn key off. if the above test works, carefully test tank harness. as per your service manual.

11.25 volts is not a very good voltage for a 12v battery. have you had the batteries checked lately?

How did you testing turn out?
What did you find out.
