:(MAN this sux!! rebuilt the carbs over the last week and went really well - did everything by the book.. Got them back on the motor yesterday put it in the water today and fired her up. Fuel spitting out of top and middle carb so i figured the floats were either not set properly or were binding so i took them apart on the water and readjusted. Got them back together and fired her up again. By the way did all the adjustements to the throttle cam etc, and set the idle mixture screws 3/4 turn out from seated. Fired her up and idle rpm super high at 1300 to 1500 for about 30 seconds put it into gear idle dropped to 750 and then died. Now she won't start at all. Please help - any input most appreciated. I'll most likely be taking her to the marina in teh morning as I am out of suggestions.
Thanks:confused:

From what I've gathered here, you were too lean! "Minimun" 7/8 turn out. 1 to 1 1/4 better and adjust from there. Follow the manual.

Yea, my manual says 3/4 out from seated??? Should I go more than that? Why is not starting anymore? Is it flooded?

Sounds like you need to re-adjust the floats again. High idle like you describe usually mean the mixture is too lean. To properly adjust the floats, you have to take the carbs off of the motor.

Yes i did that when i rebuilt them and on the water a few hours ago when they were spitting. My manual says the float has to be parallel to the carb body when holding upside down and right side up the float should hang and stop just before hitting the main jet which they all are set at.

1988 Force 85 HP. I am convinced its a setting or adjustment that I have wrong. Sync and link is not so easy as I thought. Will be taking it to the marina first thing; hopefully they'll get it right.

arghh again. Mechanic at the marina said he couldn't find the prob with my carbs and said possible something with the body itself. He threw on a set of used ones and got her running good on muffs. Took it out on the lake shortly after and idles fine, but when given some throttle or gunning it it bogs down and stalls. He also replaced the diaphram to rule that out. I noticed that the bulb does not stay firm every other pump. Other words when pumping the bulb is firm one pump and half firm the next pump. Wierd - what is up???

Yes that is odd that the bulb acts that way. Have you replaced the primer bulb? I would suspect that either the bulb is bad, there is piece trash in your fuel tank that is restricting flow, or possibly one of the 3 check valves in the fuel pump that is sticking.

+1 on what pnwboat said. Probably the check valves sticking. To test this theory, have someone pump the ball every minute or so in a nice slow rythem. If the engine keeps running, change the check valves.

Re: ARRGH!!! Carb rebuild now doesn't start

Yea I thought about that but I don' t think it's fuel pump related because I didn't have this issue before the carb rebuild. It's gotta be a carb adjustment maybe idle mix screw. Found out that the mechanic made the adjustment with the motor on muffs should be in water under load for the idle adjustments. He said he's taking it out on the water in the morning. Hopefully he'll get it. Man should've never messed with the carbs. I think frank said it right. Carbs are like nipples If you mess with them too much they go bad!

Well look at it this way. Chalk it up to a learning experience. Seems that Murphy's law comes into play with boats and boating in general much more so than other activities/hobbies.
