Motor dies

A friend of mine has a 1974 15 foot Reinell boat with a 2 stroke 50 HP Mercury outboard also circa 1974.

The problem we are having is that it's starting to die on us intermittently. We can be running along fine at full speed and then it will just stop. We can sometimes get it going again after many restart attempts but not always. Sometimes when we do get it started it seems to idle ok but then we it's put in gear and we try to accelerate it will die again.

I know this is probably kind of sketchy info but I'm hoping someone can give me a clue as to what to look at first.

I'm going to get a manual on it and look into the problem later this week.

Thanks for any insights.

Re: Motor dies

I had the same problem with my 35hp. I had to rebuild the fuel pump.

Re: Motor dies

Thanks for the responses.

Is there a way to test it before doing a rebuild?

Like maybe installing a glass inline fuel filter to watch the flow?
