i have a 1959 10hp outboard. it has run great since i restored it last year.

ok i think it started happening few days ago.

ok so i got out starts on four pulls. run the motor idles down nicely. run the motor. get everything nice a tight on the boat untie the ropes then i go. run wide open for a little then im almost all the way across the lake. then it bogs down and dies. now it always restarts the motor then it will lean sneeze and die after a few seconds. i open the high speed needle 1 1/2 turns! ok i guess its alright keep going to other lake. then i adjust the needles again after about 1-2 minutes running it bogs down again.

i think its running out of fuel. the primer on the tank is always firm. i dont get it?

could the ignition system just suddently fail it u guys think its a dirty carb. now i ran the mootr previously a few days before i didnt run for very much though just to sand bar and back. when we came back fromt he sand bar that day it did the thing today well were about out of gas so i thought ok running out of gas didnt think anything of it. now prior to that i went on vcation and didnt run the motor for i guess about a week

u guys think its just a dirty carb?

Re: why does everything happen to me?

Could be fuel, could be loss of spark on one cylinder. Need to do basic trouble shooting, compression, spark check. If problem only happens after running for a period of time, might have to check when it happens, maybe a defective coil. Maybe it is time for a carb overhaul?

Need to do a spark test when it fails on you.

Re: why does everything happen to me?

i dont think its a spark problem.

now when it did shut down. i restarted now lets see without changeing any of the needles. i would have to choke to restart it and well what would happen is it would run great for about 20-30 seconds then rev up as if like u pull the fuel connector to run the gas out and then it would lean sneeze real quick 2-3 times then die. so im thinking it runs out of gas?

probably the overhaul on the carb dont think ill go and get a whole rebuild kit since its only a year oil and i dont take out the needle packings.

hopely i can fix it good

Is it a pressure tank? Is it developing pressure?

Need to rule the possible spark issue out though.
Carb rebuild sounds in order as well.

Re: why does everything happen to me?

I have the same 59 seahorse 10. I have been restoring it and just got it to run last week and took it out for trial on water and rewind spring on pull cord broke. It was running a little rough, but as I think it is still a carb adjustment issue. Have you had any problems with shifting? My motor will shift, but I have to shift hard to get it into forward.

Re: why does everything happen to me?

revation please make your own thread about your problem

ya my pressure tank is perfect mint condition except that it looks bad but its not rusted just a little on the inside but i cleaned most of that out
and i replaced the head gasket on it with new screw gaskets and new fuel hose and new o rings in the connector the whole sha bang

its weird cause i warmed up the motor let it idle till i was ready to go like tidy up things it ran fine then after a while of running across the lake again its almost as if it ran out of fuel. now on the spark issue i replaced the coils points condensors and cleaned and regaped the points few months ago maybe 2-3. now if it was running on one cylinder wouldnt it just feel like a 2hp motor it completely shuts off. bogs then at full throttle after a little.

at high idle it again revs up likes its running out of fuel then lean sneezes 2-3 times then dies that tells me fuel

ill check spark but if this is a on and off problem how would i check it and know?

Re: why does everything happen to me?

Possible clogged fuel filter in the glass bowl or incorrectly adjusted float (too high, not letting bowl fill)

You might remove the needle assembly from the carb and make sure fuel flows freely to that point. It sounds like something is clogged. I have seen particles plug up that part there:cool:

Re: why does everything happen to me?

you've been learning, now is the time to put that to proper use. when trouble shooting, what was yesterday, has nothing to do with what is today. when ever is get a motor in for service, i take nothing for granted. i check compression, and spark 1st thing.
you could have a carb problem, or filter, easy enough to check. sticking float, ethanol poisioning, as it acts like it is running out of fuel.

is it running hot? did you check that? could have picked up sand at the sand bar, and eaten part of the impeller.

you already know these things. but go over them again. it is so easy to miss something. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=299680

ok yup troubleshooting going over compression spark gonna get new gear oil in there with new screw gaskets just for the peace of mind.

im thinking that i have a sticky needle or something.

anybody got a part number for the needle and seat for the brp number for a 1959 10hp evinrude?

Re: why does everything happen to me?

ok so i cleaned my carb. it wasnt dirty at all maybe a tiny stuff stuff stuck on high needle but dont think it would have affected performance. ok i heard that sierra needle and seats werent the right size and my kit didnt come with a clip so my needle wouldnt stick in the seat. so went and orded a needle and seat kit. and it came in today

Re: why does everything happen to me?

how did u blow it up lol wow

well right after i posted that post the dealer called me told me that the part came in. so thats an upside. hopely they got the right part and it came with the clip so when the float goes down the needle goes with it. and while im there pick up some gear oil washers and change my gear oil see how the water intrusion how bad it is
