I really don't have a funny thing Ive caught but i do have a scary thing. We were fishing the canals off the Seminole Indian reservation in Florida two years ago when i got snagged on something. When i trolled over to retrieve the snag i found i was hooked on to a baby's car seat face down. My knees darn near buckled when i saw what it was. I just knew it was going to have a child in it when we turned it over. Thank God it didn't. I had to sit and calm my nerves for about 30 minutes.

I got a knot in my stomach reading that. I bet those few seconds while you were turning it over were horrible.



I got it in the nipple last weekend. Thankfully it's still attached.

My Father in-law and I were fishing one day and he hooked a small pickerel, as he reeled it in a huge jack fish grabbed the pickerel and wouldn't let go. He almost got both of them in the boat.

I never caught a bat, but I did hit one mid cast with the pole. I don't think he was too happy.

I was camping with some friends a few years back and they were fishing in a small lake (3 acres maybe) near the camper. The one guy in our group left his pole un attended and went to get a beer. Came back not 2 minutes later and sure enough it's gone! Well the nexdt day he fishing again with another pole, and wouldn't you know it he yells hey I got something here, low and behold he snagged his pole from the day before on the bottom of the lake and reeled it in!!!!

Alligator.....

Fishing in a pond in Southern Georgia with a Hula Popper....and all the sudden, an splash and now I have a small {4' or so} alligator on the line. My buddy and I are like now what do we do.....

Ended up cutting the line before he took all of it.

Not so much what was caught, as how it was caught....

Fishing with my dad a few years ago in his canoe, he's trolling and I'm bored as all get out (not much for trolling in ponds) so I ask him to bring me to this big rock on shore that has a nice steep drop off in front of it. He's trolling around the pond forever while I pulled in three rainbow trout (I'm yelling out to him "I like mine on the grill, seems like you like yours in the water") not two seconds later his rod slams down in the boat...now I'm really laughing because I think he just snagged that branch that I know is right in that spot...


NOPE, not a branch.... A brown trout... Not small !!!

of course he had no net, and this fish pulled him around the pond in that little canoe for a good twenty minutes while he is freaking out because he's got the biggest fresh water fish of his life on...

What's he ask me to do?

Yep, swim out and beat this fish....

I swim out to him, grab the fish by the gills and slam this thing into the boat..

ended up being an 8 1/2 pound brown .. had it stuffed... had thirteen crawdad in it in different stages of digestion (the crawdad in that pond are probably sleeping easier now...)

So, it's on the wall now and he named it "Walter" ..like the fish that Peter Fonda couldn't land in "On Golden Pond" ...which was filmed here by the way........


also used to catch a ton of lobster fishing for striper on Strawberry Banke in Portsmouth...


and lastly, probably the funniest thing I've ever seen in print...

a woman reporter was covering the fishing derby from the local newspaper...she interviewed one guy who got his picture in the paper holding up a fish with the caption underneath reading....

" Local resident (insert name) standing proudly with his five pound one eyed trouser trout caught in yesterday's fishing derby"

I can not believe that got by everyone at that paper, including the editor..
We have the clipping on the wall at work....
I don't know this guy, but I'd like to meet him and buy him a beer ...'cause that's some funny S**T !!!!!

This story is 100% true, and has nothing to do with what we caught, but...

Last summer I was fishing the Mississippi River in Iowa (where we live) with my two sons, ages 7 and 13. It was getting time to go and one of them was complaining that we hadn't caught much and I said "Hey' - it's a lot better than sitting at home on the couch. There are things that happen out here that you'll never see at home. You never know, a bald eagle could swoop down right in front of us and grab a fish. That would be something to see, wouldn't it?" So, fast forward about 10 minutes (max), and we're getting in the van and he says "Dad, look", and I look out over the river and there's a bald eagle flying over the river, and right out in front of us, I SWEAR TO GOD, he swoops down and bam - grabs a fish out of the water! I am 39 years old and have spent much of my life on the river and though I've seen hundreds of bald eagles, had never seen one catch a fish and certainly not after just saying such a thing!

I got goose bumps the size of nickles and drove home with a big smile on my face because I knew I had just been the part of something very special. Believe in whatever you want to believe in, guys, but some things, in my opinion, happen for a reason.

A big brown beaver. About a 30 pounder I'd say.

I was fly fishing just before dark in a small slow stream with a floating line and sinking fly called a woolly bugger. The beaver was swimming downstream and I didn't see it until it was too late. I tried to flip the line over him like a hose but couldn't do it. He swam into the floating line and it dragged across his face until the fly hooked him right in the nose. Well that was a hell of a battle, I tried to flip it and pull it but it just hooked deeper. Finally, I decided to break it off. The poor thing just about freaked out, it swam in circles and then it climbed up on the bank, sat there and rubbed it's face. I took off as it was getting dark. I'm sure he got the fly out as I was using a barbless hook...

Many years ago..........(none of your business how many) we were crabbing in the Manasquan River near Brielle, NJ. I was a youngster and when I pulled up one of the crab traps, there was a large flounder curled up on itself inside. A man in a nearby boat exclaimed "I've been out here all #%@+# day, catch nothing, and that little kid catches a #@%&# door mat flounder in a crab trap??!! I GIVE UP !" He threw his rod down, pulled up anchor, and took off.
It's funny how you remember something like that the rest of your life.

ok, so I was gear fishing while my self proclaimed guide fishing buddy fly fished , he always tells me how more challenging and purest fly fishing is , instead of me casting lures... so anyway we were wading in the northern fork of the sacramento river , when I felt the line twinge , I set the hook , to only find out I had someones old line on my lure. so I put down my rod, and was hand winding the old line up and as it got closer it had a nice 4lb rainbow on it , that had obviously broke off some other guys rod and was trying to survive with 50+ yards of line attached to his mouth, anyway I obviously ended up catching the fish by hand and also ofcourse ribbing my flyfishing buddy , that fishing by hand was the most purest form of fishing , even over his beloved fly fishing.

Hey! That triggered a similar memory for me!

I was fishing in Colorado with a buddy of mine. While he was backing the truck down to offload the canoe, I was casting along the bank. Felt a thump, set the hook and started reeling in the fish, but it was fighting really weird.

Finally got it to shore and it was a 2 lb. largemouth bass that had been hooked by someone else, then wrapped up in a small board and broke off from the prior angler. The fish had hit my bait and during the fight that old piece of board broke loose from wherever it was stuck and I was able to get the fish to shore with the old line and board still attached.

I removed all the hooks and released the fish. Very odd, but fun.

I was Catfishing and got a nice one on the hook. Fought like a Flathead. Got him to the net and it was a nice 8# channel. Got him in the net and had a heck of a time getting him to the boat, looked like my line had somehow got wrapped around the net and hanging out and snagged on something. My buddy reached out to free the line and pulled in a nice Tiger falthead rod and reel, still hooked to the cat.
Pretty good day when you come home with a lot of fish and more gear than you left with.

I caught a 4 or 5 rung boarding ladder earlier this summer with my anchor. Looked like the mounting hardware had pulled through the transom of the boat. Bet someone was surprised when they were climbing into the boat and it let go ......

I was on a fishing charter 20 years ago to Catalina Island here. Somebody brought a big bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken. I was munching a bunch of the chicken and chucking the bones over the side and the other guys were bitching at me for messing up the fishing with the chicken. A few minutes later somebody hooked into what later turned out to be the Jackpot fish. It was a rare (and protected) Black Sea Bass around 15 lbs. When we got him up to the boat and pulled the hook, he had a few of those chicken bones sticking out of his mouth . . .

Trolling with my two step sisters, one of them lost her rod in the lake being careless. We continued trolling for a few hours catching nothing... when we were just about ready to pack it up, i hooked into a big fighter that we played for a few minutes.. reeling it up i discovered it was no fish, but the rod she'd lost earlier in the day - hooked only through the end eye on her rod... amazing!

In the same small stream where I caught the beaver (farther upstream in a deep hole) I once caught a rotten old leather belt with a Hells Angels buckle on it. Took a hell of a pull to break it loose and I figured it was a stump or something.
Gave me the creeps thinking that there might have been someone attached to it...

Somebody i knew when i was a kid back in the 70s, he was older, was fishing the Ohio River near downtown Cincy and hooked a body. They brought it shore not knowing what it was. It had been in the water for sometime.

We caught a bicycle in a lake once. It ended up going to the dump because we didn't need it but the people we rented the canoe from rode it up the boat ramp so it was still functional lol
