i was wondering if i should do anything, like cover and such because i plan to leave my motor attached to the transom of my boat. It will be stored outside in a fenced, locked private boatyard so theft is not an issue
its only an 8hp pull start

Keep the entire rig covered and it will serve you well for many years. Pretty much the only way everybody does it.

Just use a camping tarp or something, properly anchored or tied down. For what you describe I wouldn't get a custom cover or anything.

Or you can get a cheap generic boat cover from just about any marine or general hardware store (in Canada something like a Canadian Tire, not sure about the US).

It wont harm anything, think of the abuse it takes out in the hot sun, running full tilt, the only major issue with outside storage are critters. they make an assortment of outboard covers..look at wally world.

The biggest misconception people have when it comes to boats is the idea boats are supposed to get wet. They are only supposed to get wet on the OUTSIDE , water on the inside is almost certain death to a boat.

At least buy theft insurance! ---Even in private, fenced , locked yards, a 9.9 can develop legs and vanish quickly. Not saying it will happen, but it could, and I suspect the storage facility has a disclaimer clause.

theres more valuable things in the yard, its not a high crime area and its a high fence with barbed wire and heavy lock. and its a vacant lot where our friend lets us and his friends store their boats. so im not worried
