1974 Mercury 650 fuel problems

I have a 1974 650 outboard motor. After pumping the primer bulb it runs for awhile then runs of of fuel and stops. I removed the gas filter and cranked the motor and fuel shot from the fuel pump for a few seconds then it started to blow a few drops and mist. I replaced the floats and cleaned the carburetor, replaced the diaphragm for the fuel pump and put a new primer pump bulb in the fuel line. It is still doing the same thing. Could there be other problems?

Hi,

You may be sucking air into the system from the gas connectors. They seal up with o-rings which could be nicked or broken allowing air to enter the fuel line. The hose connections to them may be loose too.

Check the hose from the tank to the motor. The factory connections where the bulb was put in and where the hose connects to the motor may be loose and be allowing it to suck air into the line. Any connection in the line or any fuel lines on the motor should be checked for leaks.

I found the problem. The gas line connection point at the gas tank was leaking allowing air into the system. Thanks for the help.
