NO spark troubleshooting

I ready to shoot this engine with a high caliber rifle!

After all that I have done, I am now not getting spark when I try to turn it over. I am getting 12v at the ignition coil, but when popping off the distributor cap, I am getting nothing. Does this mean my ignition amp is fried...God I hope not they are kind of expensive. Anything else you can think of?

you need to be more specific about what your working on and what you've done so far. Whats an ignition amp?:)

First try pulling the gray wire off the back side of the RPM gauge, And see if you get spark. Also if you have a timing light you might want to hook it up to the coil wire while cranking the engine over too see if you really are getting spark or not. What engine do you have???

Re: NO spark troubleshooting

Following the flow chart, I see that it does appear that my ignition module(what i called amp lol) is bad. I am getting 0v when disconnecting the lead in the flow chart (red/wht).

I just looked online for a new ignition module and I have found them from 250-300. I have searched the thread for petronix electronic, should I do this because it will be cheaper than replacing the stock ignition module?

IS there some unwritten rule that newbies to this site do not have to tell us what they are working on. We should just guess?????
If so, don't expect much help.

LOL, sorry about that....

I have a 1993 Mercruiser 4.3 lx.

My issue is no spark, I checked the + of ignition coil, 12v. At the distributor I got 0v. Pulled red/wt bullet connected, checked both sides, Ov. It appears my ignition module is fried. I was wondering if there is some aftermarket upgrade to Electronic cheaper than the ignition module

Try unplugging the wiring to the interruptor switch on the shift cable. If that switch is bad, it grounds the coil and you get no spark. Also check the connections at the back of the distributor to ensure they are clean and tight.

Not really any legit aftermarket replacement for the ignition module. I'd go OEM for that. Its been my experience that OEM parts cost more up front, but last a whole lot longer and fit better than most aftermarket items so in the long run you save money with them. Pretty much every time I've tried to cheap on something, both auto and marine, its come back to bite me. I don't even bother trying to save money with cheap parts anymore, it just costs too much.

Hi, You might want to open this link up and scroll down to page 19 and do this test to your IGN system, That should help you find your no spark.http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/18/18B4R2.PDF

Awesome info!. I have the Thunderbolt IV ignition system. According to the Troubleshooting flow chart, my ignition module is toast!

Question would a weaking module be the cause for the lack of power and an occasional miss in the firing sequence or is this just a tune up issue?

I believe both will do that, The big thing you would want to keep a eye on is to make sure the ground to the module is clean and tight and working good, And then with a timing light hooked up to number 1 plug you will want to rev the engine up to around 3000 rpms to make sure the timing is going up to some where around 30 degress or more, If it is not then the module is bad in some way.

Possibly. Usually when the modules go they either don't work or they won't hold a steady time.
A couple things about testing ignition systems in general.

1. Use a quality meter. A radio shack or sears cheapie are often not ignition shielded and will often times give all sorts of funny readings. (or no readings at all!!!)
2. Make sure all of your positives and negatives are clean!!! Start at the battery and clean the terminals and main cables. On the block side make sure all the grounds are clean and tight. Take things apart and sand the points and cable ends, and put things back together tight. At the module make sure the ground points are clean. Make sure the wire termination (o-ring crimp) is clean. If in doubt cut the ring crimp off, strip back the wire to make sure it's clean copper and not green/black corrosion, and put on a new crimp. Don't worry to much about cutting it to short, cut it as short as you need to to get to clean wire, you can always extend the wire. Also make sure your getting 12+ volts DC to the module, and not 6 or 7 because of a voltage drop someplace.
3. Have faith in the factory flowcharts. They work for troubleshooting just fine if you follow the steps 1 by 1.
4. If your not getting the readings you want on the wires, reverse your meter leads. Put red to ground and ground to the wire your testing, not all meters are auto polarity. And electricity flows in both directions.
5. Good luck!! And let us know how you make out.
