Hey guys here's the model#652735 sereial#J-05804 just installed the motor on my boat. I replaced bottom end new impeller new bottom water housing plate new gasket and everything else looked good.So i went to the lake to make sure everything was working and no water coming out of holes. So i let the motor warm up and still nothing. So i pulled the thermostat housing off took the thermostat out started the motor up and bingo lots of water coming out. Then next went and boiled a pot of hot water and tried the thermostat and it opened fine.So i put housing back on and tried i left the thermostat out of the motor just to see if it would come out and it did.I thought it be the thermostat sticking i went and bought a brand new one and still same darn problem so not to sure anymore maybe slightly blocked.please any help thank you

You dont have a problem. The holes are exhaust reliefs. You shouldnt see water coming out unless you are running at speed. A spray at idle maybe.

The thermostat regulates the water going through the block. When it opens it dumps water into the exhaust housing where the holes are. It does not dump water at the rate of it not being there though.
If the top of the top cylinder head is not to hot to the touch your fine. You should be able to hold your fingers there for a few seconds. It should be about 140 to 150 degrees.

So i dont have to worrie if i dont see water coming out of holes.Because a friend of mine has same motor and has alot more water flow than mine.So i just dont want to fry the motor im just concerned thats all.Can i run it without the thermostat or not

I have two 1972 Johnson 65hp motors, which are identical to yours mechanically. One of them sprays almost no water out of the two round, relief holes on the back of the mid section, and the other has a pretty good stream there, when running.

Your best bet is to run the motor on the muffs for a few minutes. Don't turn that hose presseure up so high that it is force feeding the cooling system - just feed the water pump. In about a minute or so, the t-stat should open and you should see water exiting from the sides of the gearbox.

BTW, the '72 OMC 65hp motors also have two pressure relief valves in the same area as the t-stat. Once the motor is running above a certain rpm (don't try to check on the muffs), they open due to increased water pressure.
