hi guy's. I have a couple of Force 50 hps motors. they run fine. my question is for the mechanics, ( I am one, a auto mechanic, but do boat motors, mine, and some cust. sometimes ) the question is.. how does 1 of the clyinders on a 2 clyinder 50 hp lets say go lean and seize ? its fed by 1 carburetor on the 50 hp, how does this happen ? I'm thinking about the reed system, but am not sure. I don't want this to happen to mine and was curious. glad I looked here too, saw a neat way to add a tell-tale from the people here, going to do that real soon to my 50's... did something simular to my buddies 135 Mercury, they don't do it either (pee water from the tell-tale hose ) till the stat opens.. drilled small holes in the stats, works great now. any answers, I appreciate it, thanks

What led you to the conclusion that the cylinder siezed because it ran lean? What were the symptoms?

Re: Force 50 hp

hi John, thanks for the reply. the symptoms ? it pulled metal, alot. I understand it could definitely be a ingition problem, a heat problem also ? it tore up the top of the piston and broke the skirt as well when I pulled off the head to check, but it ran fine ingition wise so I assumed it to be fuel / air related ? as for my question, I am wondering if the reed system could cause a problem like that ? and it was only on 1 clyinder.. thanks, Guy

Reeds are possible and it is easy to see if they are bad.

You can look a the reeds by pulling the carb adapter plate off. They are allowed to be open a maximum of .010 I believe. (don't have my book here)

How about your spark plugs, are you running the plug specified in the engine manual?

Re: Force 50 hp

hi John.. haven't been on here much. thought I would check. yes, the spark plugs are correct heat range wise.. I might look at the reeds to check, I don't want this to happen to mine is why I am asking. runs ok, want to keep it that way.. that's why I asked, I could see it if it had a single carb for each clyinder like a 85 hp for instance, but since it has 1 carb that feeds both clyinders I am curious how 1 clyinder could pull metal and not the other one.. thank you for your views, Guy
