i have a honda 10hp, 1980 bp100. it runs good, but when i accelerate, it sounds like bells....... like something is hitting the backside of the flywheel.
is this normal or is something hitting the backside?
Definitely not normal, you should be able to see what ever is hitting. There is a
magnetic pickup that reads the rotation of the fly wheel for spark, could be that is loose.
i think it has something to do with the recoil. the sounds are definately coming from the bell on top of the flywheel, not from the underside. it only happens when you open the throttle quickly. if i accelerate slow, there is no noise.
thanks
dk
A definate recoil issue.Remove the starter and give it a good cleaning and lube with some very light grease. Please do'nt try to take that little starter apart and put it back together. You will end up really mad and those starters are reddily available all over.
That manual pull is your starter.Sorry for the confusion. When you pull the rope you have pawls that extend out of the hub of that starter by centrifugal force and engage a cup bolted to the top of the flywheel that resembles a bell and sounds like one if those pawls are not retracting when the engine starts.
actually the sound comes out when i full throttle the motor. i pulled the starter assembly and it seemed clean. i guess i will just live with the bells...... i troll with bells on my poles, now i will have bells on the motor, lol
Try removing the recoil start assembly and starting it with a rope. See if the noise is still present. I had the same bell sounds on one of my Honda motors before and it ended up being the bearing in the timing belt tensioner.
thanks walt, that sounds like some great advice. i will give that a try! i have three motors, two dont work.
the honda is the only one working. a little gun shy taking the honda apart.....dont want to have three motors pulled apart lol.
I had the same sound on my Johnson 15hp. It was the recoil. The bolt that connects it wasn't tightened correctly so the top washer was too loose and occasionally touching the flywheel at acceleration. Mine needed a washer at the bottom to seat it tightly still allowing the recoil to spin freely but without slop in the top washer.
Don't know if this helps, or if there's any similarity between the Johnson and Honda config, but it solved it for me...
