Is a four cylinder Volvo 120 a weak choice to power a 26 foot 1981 Bayliner cruiser?

Yep, it would be greatly underpowered.

Have a great day

If this is such a horrible weight to power combination, it begs the question why would the manufacturer put out such a product. You would think that extensive tests, trails and trouble-shooting would have taken place prior to release.

We have recalls all the time in other industries--particularly in the pharmaceutical and automotive sector--usually for problems that are not blatantly obvious at the time of product release.

It wouldn't seem to take a rocket scientist to determine that a five or six thousand pound boat would need a bit more oomph!

Or is this an aftermarket modification?

cause they sell it doesn't mean you have to buy it. That boat needs 260 hp. 5.7.

I just spent the weekend showing a good friend of mine how to work a similar boat. His is a 1987 27 foot Sea Ray with twin Merc 165s coupled to Alpha drives. The Boat would plane out (slowly) and make 28 knots with both motors at full throttle but would only do 6 knots with one engine at full throttle. You won't see much more than 8 knots in the boat your considering with that set up.

Hey guys hold on a minute.

I hate it when people jump to conclusions without all the information.

Bayliner made a discplacment hull in the early to mid eighties that wasn't designed to take a lot of power. They were a "trawler" type of boat that was supposed to go slow. Many of them had a 4 cyl Volvo motor and outdrive. They are by all accounts decent, inexpensive, seaworthy boats.

Get the facts or go home.

picture of similar bayliner...
that boat will do fine for its intended purpose with a 120. you will NOT pull a wakeboarder or tuber! it is not a full planing hull. semi displacement at best.

These hulls were designed to be semi-displacement hulls. 7-8 knots at 2500 rpm was typical at 2 gals/hr. Nothing wrong with semi-displacement style hull. The question is whether that boating style fits your wants/needs. Top speed is about 12 knots.

I believe it is called the Explorer? Exactly what the last few posters mentioned. This is a trawler type boat, not a planing express cruiser like most pictured!

if you were running only one engine at full throttle you were showing him how to make his boat die a fast death. never do this with a twin i/o application, read the manual.
