Hi,I'm looking at a 1988 Starcraft Islander 22' The guy is selling it do to a soft transom.I have replaced a transom on a smaller aluminum boat but was wondering how hard it is on a 22' starcraft. He said the motor is off the boat and would sell it for 800 bucks with the trailer. Is this a hard job to do and how much money do you think I could spend doing this project.

Re: 1988 Starcraft 22' Islander Needs Transom

Hello and welcome to the starcraft club! (Beat you both Kev and Rick:D) There are plenty of us that have done transom jobs on these starcrafts and they are easy to do, especially with the help available here at Iboats. The transom is heldon by a number of thru bolts and sits in a c channel at the bottom. It can be replaced without removing the splashwell, and some have done it easily in an afternoon. The Islander is a nice boat, I would say go for it!

bret said it exactly.

transoms on starcrafts (or any tinny) are VERY easy, especially if its an I/O with the motor and drive already removed.

EDIT: I see its an outboard, even better. should look something like this:

remove all the screws that hold the transom and c channel to the transom

trim down the cap or follow the tutorial on how to do it without cutting (in the starcraft forum, tips and tricks)

and the tricky part, removing it. i was able to snake a wire through a hole in it and lift using a large pry bar

cur out new transom of laminated 3/4" exterior grade ply (2 layers, 1 1/2" total thickness)

seal with a few coats of resin and drop it back in. can be done easily in a weekend.

the origional transom is going to be 3 pieces, the main part and 2 top almost triangle shaped pieces. i would recommend making the new one 1 solid piece.

Bob as the othr members of the Starcraft club have said it really isnt hard to do a transom in one of our boats . The only real differance between a smaller aluminum boat nd the one you are looking at now is a 22' boats transom is much bigger but its still a weekend job if you put in 2 decent days on it over the weekend .
