Re: Sea Hag 2 rebuild

Well we did do a little work yesterday and removed the fuel tanks, one had about 15 gallons of fuel and the other about 1 gallon, now what is the best way to get rid of the stale fuel?????? and how would one clean the tanks as there was a minimal amount of rust on the inside. the tanks seem to be in fairly good shape no they are in great shape just the inside needs cleaning bad, any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Peter:)

Re: Sea Hag 2 rebuild

we are removing old transom today right after we finish removing the engine and outdrive, now my question is what plywood is the most economical and best, i will encapsilate with resin. we dont have a grade and they tell me that it is the same as marine grade, what joy to live in a little hicktown where we build cottages but dont work on boats. Peter:)

THANKS FOR ANY ADVICE

S,
Please make sure you use Marine Grade Douglas Fir. The glues are waterproof and the fir holds up really well to water. You can special order from customer service as Lowes. It's pricey but it's what you need. also it takes a while to get to you. Be patient and use the right stuff. You don't want to do this again any time soon.

economical or best... pick one not both!

bang for your buck, go with ex grade ply coated in epoxy. a 4x8 sheet of 3/4 in ex grade will run you maybe $15, where marine will run you $40.

I'm with you Andy. Just thought I'd share the link. Most folks don't understand the marine grade glues are way better than the exterior grade.

Re: Sea Hag 2 rebuild

previously mention was talk about putting in a belly tank..
I found a Moeller FT4033 40 gallon Marine Poly Tank from GreatLakesSkipper, for $150 + $110 Shipping, it fit perfectly between my stringers about 1" from the steps to about 12 inches from the front mount on the engine http://gallery.kainonmedia.com for pictures.

I also used Marine Plywood (2 3/4" pieces) Epoxied together, layed flat with about 600-800lbs of weight on them, let set for 3 days, then I coated both sides with CPES ( 2 quart kit ) using about 1qt per side, then I painted both sides with Marine Enamel Mercruiser Black Paint. ( i'll be bringing a sample with me )

I'd like to get some of the blue foam for under the floor.. but it's soo expensive. the 2 part foam isn't much cheaper, i figured i need about 76cf of the stuff.. which is about $800-$1200.

Re: Sea Hag 2 rebuild

After the way the old transom came out it will be replaced with the best no chance of it decaying in my lifetime again, I hope, i am waiting for quotes from us and western canada as i am unable to find a suitable supplier in ontario, oh well it will be already when the time comes but 72 lbs for a 4x8 sheet and 15 layers of lamination had better be good. well thats it for now thank you for the advice and the link to the plywood brochure. We will need a crane to lower it into the stern. well we will see. Peter:)

Schreck the cuddy on the right hand side of this photo looks very similar to your rig:D This is from the '74 brochure...unfortunately it does not include the aluminum boats...mostly glassers. We'll find it eventually though:)

Re: Sea Hag 2 rebuild

This thread hasn't been active in ages, but just in case schreck ever checks in again, I hope that we can see some progress pics. I remember seeing this boat when it used to be stored years ago on Great North Drive in Parry Sound. I thought it was awesome then, even though it may have needed some work. Hopefully the restoration is going well. It would be great to see it out on the bay someday.
