1997 evinrude ocean pro

my motor was running great, all of a sudden , for lack of better words, kind of backed down on me. it idles fine, has trouble plaining, once it does it'll will run 28-30 at 3500 rpms with little problems. anytime i try to give throttle pass 3500 rpms it seems like its not getting enough fuel, motor also bounces around a little. thought it was missing so i changed the plugs, no help. also, doesnt seem like its burning much gas, could it be some kind of fuel restriction? my first boat so i dont know much about outboards so im stumped. i know its a vague description of the problem, just thought some one could point me in the right direction. thanks a bunch

I have a 97 90 hp ocean pro, so I have been waiting for someone to help you...

I ran my motor for the first time sunday and I think i should be going faster...

but my tach stopped working...so i dont know the rpms..which are important.

there are high speed jets and low speed jets...

it is possible the high speeds are dirty..

can you try a seperate fuel tank and bypass the fuelk delivery system you have now??

I am wondering how you are thinking it needs more fuel

maybe the WOT adjustment isnt set correctly

what HP is it?

Fuel line are always my first try, check and make sure you have no cracks or place where it could be sucking in air..also check your fuel filter/s... the next thing would be to clean the carbs..this is always my first 3 things...then you can check the spark...maybe a weak coil..i have a cheap little tool from my local auto parts store that has a ground clamp and inserts into your plug wire and has a threaded rod that can be adjusted to determine the power of the coil..handy little thing...had a similar problem on a Yamaha I use to own and it had a weak coil...fixed my problems when I replaced it.

its a 150 hp. pretty sure its not cavitating but im not 100 percent positive. it usually runs about 48mph at 5300 rpms. i can bypass my fuel system, so i will def give that a try. like i said i dont know much about outboards so could u explain how i could clean the high speed jets? as far as me saying its not getting gas, just seems like at high rpms its trying but not getting the fuel.anything under 3500 rpms it runs pretty good. also, the primer bulb seems to not be staying firm, is that a problem? some ppl tell it supposed to get a little soft others its supposed to be firm, just confusing me more. another stupid question, whats a wot adjustment? i had a buddy come by and check the coils, he said the seemed to be ok but i will def go see if i can find a similar tool to test the strength. and i just changed th hoses but i will check them also because u never know. i sure thank you guys for you responses to my questions! i will give all your suggestions a try and let u know how it goes. thanks again

they have some stickys at the top of this forum....that can help with the regular cleaning of carbs( CLEANING THE HIGH SPEED JETS)\\

WOT is Wide Open Throttle

you said before you could get 5300 rpms..that must have been pretty close to WOT...

so sounds like something has changed...might be a cracked fuel hose letting air in...might be a clogged High speed jet.

or restriction in your fuel system..maybe a new filter is due

get a 6 gallon outboard gas tank and bypass your current fuel system, make sure that the hose you use is in good shape. The bulb usually does not stay hard. if this fixes your problem then it is a fuel line issue. You can try replacing the connector first. The carb cleaning is not real hard..you can also try a fuel additive like Sea Foam to help clean your carbs with out removing them.
