My early 5HP early 60's Sea King has issues, Bought it used at a garage sale. The owner said it worked great:(

It has no serial number but it is a 60-63, equal to a J/E 5.5

I replace the coils adjusted the points and put a new impeller in. With a little tweeking she fired up and ran, (in a water tank;))

Looking close, it was leaking fluid and air out the side of the housing at the seam where the crank is located. So I tore it down and this is what I found. Someone had tried to pry the casing apart with a screwdriver and put some pretty nasty gouges in the casing. I can only assume they hadn't taken the 2 bolts out behind the intake before they tried to pry it apart.

I cleaned it up as best I could put a small amount of gasket sealant on it and put it back together. She fired up and ran, but not good. I tore her back down. The sealant had plugged the holes on the bushings. I removed the sealant and put her back together without any. She fired right up but now she still is leaking at the casing.

I don't have a manual, but have looked at parts diagrams on line. I don't see any reference to a gasket, and it would make the spacing at the bushing too wide.

Any ideas on how to fix this??? What, if any sealant should I apply? Do I mill one side down and use a gasket? Or do I live with a leaky motor?

I would do a little sealant research.See if there is something that will hold together better. You might try something Like epoxy/liquid aluminum in a tube just enough the smooth out the dents.Perhaps after assembly you could neatly seal it from outside.

I was thinking of putting some JB Weld on it but I wouldn't get it back apart. I think it's a little warped. It would still need a sealant. Maybe just a fine line on the outer edge.

The edges of the scars are probably raised a little you may be able to smooth them lightly with a fine file. Then fill just the scars with a little slow curing gasket compound.

I smoothed the casing damage down and used some gasket compound. Put her all back together and I'm letting it cure overnight.

Back in the tank tomorrow and I'll see how good a job I did.

Thanks for the advise.

Re: SeaKing Gale 60ish Motor issue

Update - Finally got it together and not leaking, 4th time tear apart and back together. No leaks - yet:cool:

The second time I had a small leak so I filled and milled some more.

The third time I had it sealed and running but after about 15 minutes of running it gummed up and would not spin easy. Back apart one more time, cleaned and back together with a different sealant and also started with fresh gas and oil just in case the other was contaminated.

The relation of the handle markings, start - shift - slow and stop, is not set to the action of the motor. It idles down great but will the engine willl die if I go below slow on the handle. There is a mark on the throttle control (blade below Armature) that lines up with the throttle lever on the carb, if I go below that mark it will cut out and die.

How low should this idle? or do the markings on the throtle control / handle really matter?

Test run coming soon:eek:

It should idle dead-slow. The handle markings are always way off. Ignore them.

Re: SeaKing Gale 60ish Motor issue

Test run, went to the lake last night.

Started on the second pull and after a little adjustment it was running great.
Then it dies, forgot to open fuel vent on can.

Starts right back up and runs good for about 5 minutes. from there after the motor would run in neutral but when put in gear it would run for 10 - 30 seconds then die. starts up runs in neutral and dies in gear.

Any advise on what to look for, bad fuel pump, Float?, carb plugged,

Check and clean the carb. The Top Secret file at the top of the Johnson/Evinrude forum tells how to set and adjust that and other kinds of carbs.

Re: SeaKing Gale 60ish Motor issue

tmcalavy, Thanks for the tip on th "TOP SECRET FILE", I tore down the carb and cleaned her good put it back together and took it over to the lake - ran for 30 - 40 seconds and plugged up:( - It was running great in the tank.

Now I will tear it back down to see what plugged and where. But now have all new fuel lines;) and a new plastic tank. I'll get this right yet.

Has anyboby ever put a fuel filter in the line from the tank to the motor.

Sounds like there is crud in your tank, getting pulled into the carb. I use those little funnel-shaped fuel filters on my older, smaller outboards for just that reason.
