Hi, I have an Evinrude Lightwin 4006 (1970) outboard which I purchased last year.

It runs great at half and full throttle, but haven't been able to get it to run smoothly at low throttle. It runs roughly and eventually stalls, usually in only a few seconds. I've cleaned and rebuilt the carb, given it the seaform treatment and replaced the spark plugs.

When I was cleaning out the carb, I noticed that the low-speed needle looks like the tip was chipped off, but I'm not sure if this is the way it's supposed to look. I have the service manual for this outboard and it doesn't exactly resemble the drawing. I'm attaching a photo of the needle and hopefully some experts out there can tell me judging by the photo if I need a new needle and perhaps where the best place to order one from.

After putting the kit in the carb. did you do a link and sinc.? Also, did you adjust the slow speed setting properly? The needle isn't supposed to be needle sharp and judging by the picture yours is a little worn but I would guess it's still serviceable. It certainly sounds as though you still have a carb. issue and you might want to give it one more thorough cleaning, followed by lots of compressed air to blow out each and every passage from all directions paying careful attention to the slow speed ports. Best of luck. Rick.

Hi Rick, thanks for the reply.

I'm not familiar with the terminology 'Link and Sinc/Sync'. My service manual only makes a passing reference to it. There's a description on Throttle Cam Adjustment under the Carburetor Adjustment section that talks about timing and linkages, so I wonder if this is what you mean. Suffice to say I did not do this and once I figure out what's involved I will give that a try.

I may also give it another cleaning and check the slow speed ports.

Thanks for your help,
Derek

Your on the right track. It is a matter of adjusting the carb. to the carb. Try doing it before re-cleaning the carb. as that alone could be your problem. Rick.
