1983 50hp Johnson Dies when I give it the gas(bad lower seal?)

Thank You for your time ; I have a outboard I just bought. It's a 1983 50 hp johnson model J50BELCTA iT starts right right up and idles fine after I put in gear and give more throttle it justs dies on me. Also when I putted back to the dock I took it out of gear and the motor was just idiing and all of a sudden the motor just reved and took off I turned the key off and it kept going full rev. till I put my hand over the air intake and choked it out. What makes a motor take off like that? thanks John

I cleaned the carbs put her back in the water and this time she made up to 3/4 throttle before dieing out and then after awhile it went back to bearly any throttle and she dies out. My lower cylinder has fire , has 130 lbs compression(both clyinders do) But when I pull plug wire on lower motor dies. And the motor has ranaway on me three times now.when the motor is running and I give gas it just dies. Someone said it could be a bad lower seal I'm Lost ,thanks John

read about ethanol in the reference above, handling the old lines breaks up the crud, and it goes right to the high speed jets. remove carbs again and jets, replace fuel lines and flush them out before connecting to carbs.

I guess thats why she went down hill so fast clogged back up. should I put anything to the bad lower seal ideal? I'd hate to go thru everything to replace that lower seal for nothing. thanks I'll replace the fuel lines this time around. John

do the carbs, and fuel lines, much easier, then consider it. if exhaust was leaking from the lower seal, the motor would run with the cover off, and get sick with the cover on.

I did notice when the motor was running bad that if I pump the fuel bulb it was'nt getting hard and sounded like it was spraying into the lower carb,could it be that float is sticking and thats the reason the lower clylider not firing correctly (flooded)? The last time I cleaned the carbs (but did'nt address the fuel lines) the bulb pumped up good and hard and she idled great and I even got to 3/4 throttle and then soft bulb again and no power (filled up with junk again) . just trying to learn from my mistakes . John when the motor is not running, and you pump the bulb, it should get hard. once the motor is running the bulb will soften, as the fuel pump draws fuel thru it. yes, you could have a float or needle sticking, or not sealing all the way.

redone the carbs , installed all new fuel line put clamps on all lines .started her up on muffs ,idled just right bumped the cam follower (not to much did'nt want her to runaway again)when I bumped the follower she reved up nicely. I thought We had it,Took her to the water still only 1/2 or 3/4 throttle. seems as soon as the plate hit the timing stop and the cam follower keeps going opening the throttle she dies out.really dont know what to check now cant afford to take in to a shop. thanks john

if you figure it out, let me know have an 87 40 doing the same thing. been working on it off and on for months, i even replaced reeds and gaskets.

You stated earlier that you have spark on the lower cyl and when you pulled the lower plug wire it dies. Does it die when you pull the upper wire. Did you try to run on water with cowl off? If your'e sure that the carb is spotless you may have to take a timing light out on the water and see if it's dropping spark on one of the cylinders. Have you tried pumping the bulb when you get to 3/4 throttle to see if it increases the rpms?

Took to a repair shop this morning, waiting on call from them to see whats up.
another guy is telling me he thinks its sucking air thru the lower seal ?
I'd like to know for sure before tearing her down that much ! I'll post when I hear something, thanks, John

Picked up the boat from the shop he said he boiled the carbs out with acid and for me to try the boat out in the bay and if it did'nt work owe him nothing and he'll dig deeper starting monday. If it fixed it then come back and give him $100.00 for doing the to carbs (reg.$150.00 for both).WELL took her out as soon as I left there BOTA BING she runs like a coon from a pack of hound dogs. Now If he found something else we may never Know but it works now and I'm very thankful for every ones input and help and I know everything I did do to the motor per tashasdaddy's help did'nt hurt only helped and will keep the carbs from clogging again(new fuel lines). I will be honest I cleaned those carbs Three times and used the same intake/carb gaskets each time. I can't help but wonder if the extra air might been entering thru one of those gasket or both. The first thing I noticed when I took the cowl off was the new intake/carb gaskets. A $100.00 lesson for two couple of dollar gaskets?? Thanks again, John Mark

Yeah, but sometimes it's wortha $100 to get on the water quicker. Sounds like a good mechanic you got there. At least he treats you well ans stands by his work.

Well that's great if the problems are permantly fixed. A gasket huh? I can see that, sounds plausible to me. And sure glad it wasnt the lower seal eh?

I had the same problem and i found that the rubbber bowl gasket were being squeezed out and was not letting the card seal off to the intake manifold and it was sucking air.I trimmed the gasket and sanded it smooth to the carb body and it worked fine. Hope this helps
