That's the scenario right there, trying to figure out if my 1980 85HP Evinrude will fit on a 1995 115HP Johnson transom/swivel/power trim unit. I'm also wondering if my 1977 power trim controller will work with it or if I'd have to get a new controller? Any help is appreciated!

Your 85 hp should fit on the midsection of a 1995 crossflow engine. (they also made loopers in 95.) The shifter under the 85 is the old style, but should work. You will have some issues to deal with. The 95 midsection is a two wire trim system and requires the trim electrial box to be mounted on the back of the engine powerhead. (The 80 is a 3-wire trim system that has a box mounted under the boat splashwell.) Your 80 does not have the machined bosses to mount the box. You could convert the 80 exhaust cover to a newer one. The 80 block did not have an oil injection/fuel pump, the 95 does. A side issue-doubtful the fuel hoses on the 80 are alcohol resistant-you may want to replace all of them on the 80.

Thanks! I'm not going to use the power head just the trim/transom pieces. Mine didn't come with the manual or power trim parts and I found a good deal on that 95 unit. Live and learn there. Heard there are remote trim switches you can set up so even if my throttle/switch isn't compatible I could use a seperate switch? How do I know if the motor is a "looper"?
