I just picked up an Evinrude "Fisherman" serial number 5522B 51654 Patent 1957, 1959 and would like to change the impeller. There doesn't seem to be any access to the gear shifter. Any information related to this engine would be appreciated including confirmation of HP I was told it is 5hp and 5.5hp from two different sources.

1961 5.5hp. You have to remove the powerhead on those motors to disconnect the shift linkage underneath. That's the only way to drop the lower unit.

If I have to remove the powerhead to replace the impeller what can I expect as far as job goes. Are there gaskets and or seals required? What about small parts or bearings that may come out when removing the powerhead?

Thanks

You will find a carbon seal assembly when you get the powerhead off. That assembly is vital and you should make sure it is all in good condition. Always replace the 303355 gasket and 303347 o-ring. You will also need a new 306205 powerhead gasket.
