Read the story. Figured it was bogus. Wanted to say something like jay and tackle said but couldn't figure out how to say it without offending someone. So I'll just say ditto.

Just to clarify, I didn't mean to knock gonefishie for posting the story any more than I blame my wife for forwarding similar stuff. My issue is with the people who create it and knowingly pass it off as nonfiction.

Gonefishie, you should have written if it were true or not. That wasn't cool, imo. I do blame those who forward this stuff. For all we know, the original did say it was a story and nothing more.

As for the 'patriotism' posts.. thinking your country is the best simply because you live in it is stupid, plain and simple. Being a good person doesn't make you a patriot and being a patriot doesn't make you a good person. So let people tout they are 'patriots'.. I consider it a warning label of lack of free thought.

I must be the only moron who fell for it.
It must be hard not to like a creature that thinks you are God.

Guys! I had no idea that it was a fictional story, I'm sorry. When I first read it on the other forum I thought it was very touching so I passed it on. The OP on the other forum didn't said anything about it being a lie. I hate propaganda too. Y'all should see the fire I stirred up when I went over there and informed them that it's fake after Bruce's post.

My friend, don't worry about it. These things float around the internet and email chains and they sometimes get so much "play," that it hard to separate truth from fiction.

Cheers, you are forgiven. :) Sounds like you were manipulated as well. I had one hell of a lump in my throat until I saw the snopes post.. Eye sweat was even forming. It is a very well written story.

And, to be clear, neither did I. My apologies if I came off that way.

I know how these things are touching (I'm a huge dog lover) and the desire to pass them on. I just don't get the people who write them.

I snopes everything before passing them on. Kinda like the Mythbusters show showing an elephant afraid of a mouse, I'm amused at what comes up as true (and I know Snopes is not perfect).

Yes..it was a good story and can easily see why it get passed along.

15 years ago or so I was working at a small company of 400 people where some good intentioned guy forwarded a Virus warning to the whole company. IT quickly did a snopes on the subject and sent it out to the whole company as well. Since then, I run every story by snopes before forwarding it.

I take it one step further - I tell every contact that I have not to send me chain mails about anything. Real viruses make the news pretty quickly, so I don't want to hear about them, unless its by a reliable news or business source.

One other thing that I get kind of annoyed about with chain emails, is the amount of internet resources that are wasted by them. Think about how much bandwidth is eaten up by all of the useless info bouncing around the world. The darn things are the junk mail of the web.

I don't get the junk ones sent to me anymore. When I'd get one loaded with misinformation, half-truths and downright lies (most are...), I'd research the topic a bit, quote sources, and resend it back to everyone on the list with the comment "Don't you even look at this stuff before you send it out ??". People quit sending you stuff when you call them out a couple of times in front of their buddies.
