Fuel Tank Capacity

I just bought a 1992 Reinell model 17e boat. I've been unable to to determine the fuel tank capacity. I've chk'd the internet with no luck and the Marine repair shop had no stats on the tank capacity.
Any info would be appreciated so I can determine how much fuel stabilizer to use.
thanks, Mappermac

Re: Fuel Tank Capacity

if the tank is somewhere that you can access it measure the outside dimensions and calculate the volume.

I'll add the formula to make it easy. Length times width, times height, then divide it by 231 and that will give you gallons. 25"X25"X50" = 3125 divide by 231 +135.28 gallons.

Thank you for the gas tank volume calculation formula. I should be able to get the measuring tape where it needs to go for the measurements.

Chaz has the right idea. But you could also remove the sender and put a stick in the tank to see what the fuel level is compared to the tank depth. If it's about half full and takes another 20 gal--then 40 gal. Probably as accurate as you are going to get w/o running it dry.

That's exactly what I do when I buy a new car, truck, or boat. Just be sure to carry a 5 gal can with you and be certain you can safely empty the can into the tank, you may need a funnel. This method also allows you to see where empty is on the gauge.

Oh yeah, fill the can first.:D

Me too, not only does it give you capacity (which you would know on a car) but also run time. The caveat is if you do that on the water you're going to need a friend with a boat to tow you back to shore. Trying to refuel on the water is not only difficult, but dangerous, and bad for the enviroment as inevitably some of that gas is going to get spilled.

You may expect the capacity to be between 25 and 35 gal. Sometimes they state the capacity on the tank label, or there is a model number containing the capacity.

1. If you can get to the tank to measure the dimensions, you can read the plate on it.
2. I refuel in the water all the time, with jerry cans. No danger or spills here.
