ok i am trying to get to the impeller to check it on a new boat I bought and wanted to check the impeller before I get the carbs rebuilt and no one in town has a manual I know how to change the impeller an the local boat shop has one in stock however i removed the 6 lower unit bolts and it drops about 3/4" the stop I do not want to force it am I missing something should this not go ahead and drop out if not can someone guide me through what I missed. I am trying to get this in the water before sunday for wife BDay but cannot figure why it will not slide on out. I tried to wiggle it a little but do not want to get forceful. Is there a pin or retaining ring in the upper that is holding it?

If you think very hard about what items run up and down through the leg of the motor you might come to the conclusion that something in there needs to shift the gears in the lower unit, something has to spin to drive those gears, and there must be some water delivery tubes in there. Well, the drive shaft is splined at the top where it enters the engine crankshaft so that's not the issue (unless it has actually seized in place). The answer to your question and the many others who have run into this issue is that you need to disconnect the shift shaft under the bottom carb. That is step #1, not #7. With all the bolts out (including the one under the trim tab) the lower unit has now dropped and has put a lot of tension on the shift linkage. Relieve that tension because if you manage to disconnect it now, the lower unit will fall to the floor. Ahhhh -- the value of a service manual.

Gun, As Silvertip said, there is a clevis pin in the front base of the motor. Pull it and slide the linkage to the side to free the shift rod. The LU will now fall off.

Follow the procedure to the letter to do a quality job.
