Possible reasons for 90hp Merc to be running on 3cyl

I was hoping to hear possible reason for an 86 Mercury 90hp to be running on 3cylinders

Either it lost a switchbox or one side of the stator, switch the red and red/white wires and the blue and the blue/white wires on the boxes if it switches cyls. it's the stator if it stays the same its the boxes.

I haven't purchased this outboard yet but was wondering if this is a better route than my 67 Johnson. The johnson doesn't work either but if its an easy fix would u suggest purchasing it? He's asking $500 but any reasonable offer accepted

Even a professional mechanic can get burned buy engines on speculation of what it will take to repair one, don't buy anything that not run the way you want it too. It won't take much to be a major improvement to your old rude they were very thirsty and parts are drying up, plus the electromatic units were troublesome.

Thanks for the advice. Its been a tough season since i haven't been out at all. The owner was taking the motor to a place on chattaqua lake to have a service tech look at it and im waiting on his findings shortly. Thanks

I am actually from rochester NY. The gentleman who has the motor was going down there.
