Well, I purchased my first boat earlier this year (Procraft fish/ski) and we realized this wasn't the boat for us. Luckily we got a good deal and actually made some money when it sold in four days on Craigslist! I think I sold it too cheap!

Anyway, we decided we want a bowrider. We went to the Sea Ray dealer yesterday and looked at their 185 Sport which was very nice (to us) We like the depth of the boat when you're inside and the comfortable seats. Our fish/ski wasn't very comfortable.

We have narrowed it down to a few boats and I want your opinion on which one you would chose. All of their pricing is high from what I've found using NADA which I know is just a guide but still...this is the standard people used when they bought my boat so I'm going to return the favor!! ha ha

The first boat is a 2004 Crownline 206LS. His asking price is high at 17650 but we like the boat from what we've seen and may take the drive to take it out. I was a little concerned with the 4.3 MPI but he says it's just fine and will roll 55+. He said half the hours were spent in salt water but said it was washed/flushed and the trailer was pressure washed after each use.

Second boat is a 2008 Chaparral 190SSI - asking 19,500. This boat is local but I don't know much about it as there aren't any pictures and it's being listed by a broker. I do know it only has 28 hours and a five year extended warranty which is nice. NADA doesn't have any pricing on 2008 so I'm not sure what to offer if we get to that point. I'm still waiting on engine/HP rating but I'm guess it's also the 4.3.

Last boat is a 2006 Sea Ray 205 Sport. We like the boat from the pics, it has the 5.0 but NO trailer. Pricing is high since NADA with the trailer is 15-17. We're thinking if we liked the 185 we saw we will really like the 205. This is a local dealer that has been in business for years.

We don't want to spend more than 18k, unless we see something else that knocks our socks off. I just started looking two days ago and aren't in a big rush even though it would be nice to be back on the water since we have a couple months left in our area.

We don't have a local Crownline dealer that I'm aware of, Sea Ray is not too far and Chaparral is around 40 miles. Dealer support will be important if there is any warranty left on the boats.

So, what do you think????

Thanks!!

You just purchased new and then sold your new boat and made money.

Have you thought to purchase new again or at least check the new prices?

i would take the 205 searay. you can always get a trailer, you will probably have to. so negotiate that with it. if you got the 185 sea ray, i think you would soon want something larger.

Thanks for the replies!

Yeah, I'm a little skeptical about the 50+ remark with the 4.3 MPI. Of course, I would ask to take it out and see for myself before purchasing. He said it's basically 19ft with the 2ft swim platform. We are favoring this boat by features and looks alone but deep down I know this may not be the right decision.

No, we purchased USED and sold for a profit. It was a 2003 180 Combo and everyone wanted it! It was fast, 65mph with the 23 Tempst Plus, and that's what appealed to most buyers. Plus, it was an attractive boat. I don't really want to purchase new because I feel we can get a much better boat by purchasing a few years old...let them take the depreciation hit!

We do like the Sea Ray but I'm not sure they'll be willing to deal since they are proud of their prices. I just don't see them coming down to 17k with a trailer but it doesn't hurt to try. There is a guy that is selling his 185 for 15k that is in great condition but it's still high from what I'm seeing on NADA.

Just mentioning because I have seen used boats 2004+ priced MORE than an new 2008 w/the rebates. You might be closer than you think if you are only going back a few years.

Thanks for the info. I haven't found many 2008's in my area but there are a few Crownlines and Chaparrals close to Charleston. I'll have to shoot them an email and see what pricing they come back with.

I would suggest working a deal on one with a V8, if a dealer has the boat without trailer, I bet they'll work with you.

V6 is ok for smaller boats, but in a 20'r, get the V8.

Do not even consider a 3.0 regardless of price.

What did you end up buying? Did you look at the Crownline?

I ended up purchasing a 2006 Four Winns H210 that I found on Craigslist. It only had 90 hours with the 270HP 5.0, SS prop, tower with bimini, covers, etc.. and was in really good shape. It was a couple hours from me but was worth the drive for 19k. I don't think I stole it but I got a good deal from what I saw when I was looking.

AWESOME. I bought the Crownline. ;-)

The price had dropped when I had found it last week on Craigslist, it too was in really nice shape. Very clean. Wish us both luch with our 'new' boats. I put about 5 hours on ours over the weekend, so far so good. One minor thing, the tach seems to be stuck. I will be working on that soon.

...oh, about the top end. I got to 50MPH with the Crownline no problem, not sure if I could have gotten 55. I didn't hold it there long...I didn't think 50 was bad for a stock alum prop. 50 is fine with me, my bass boat goes 60 and I think I can count on one hand how many times I have taken it there.

The Crownline looks really nice! I like the dash layout and the cupholders up front. We've hit 55 but I'm sure the speedo is off. It has a 19p prop which will be nice when we're pulling but I have to watch the RPM's when I trim it out so I don't go over 5k. I'll probably pick up a 21p one day...

I really like that boat! Good job.

My 180BR Crownline with the 4.3 will do 53 at best wide open. It might touch 54, but not 55 unless the wind is pushing me. I can not see how a 20" would hit 55 with the same motor.

Both boats look very good though. I really like my Crownline.

Thanks. I can't see the pics of your boat, photobucket is blocked here at work.

I'll check out from home.
