Permatex #3, aviation gasket sealant.

Only need it on the areas where the ring makes contact with the gear box housing to get a good seal and prevent corrosion.

Hhmmm...but the three shims I have are between the clamp ring and gear box housing. Couldn't water seep between the shims?

That's why there are orings on both sides of the double bearing box. One seals in the clamp ring, the other seals in the main housing. The orings seal from water intrusion, not the sealer. You put a very thin coat of permatex on the the surface of the gear box where the clamp ring mates up to it. All this does is prevent corrosion.
Are you looking at the manual I gave you a link to?

Hello DonS,

Yes, thanks for the manual. I finally got the u-jonts done. And I'm ready for installation of everything. Thanks for the input on the Permatex although the manual states to use No.2 and not No.3.

The Volvo Penta Workshop manual and also the Clymer's manual both state No.2. There is a difference between both. No.2 is a black paste and No.3 is a reddish-brown liquid.

I apoligize for some misinformation.

On page 44 of the OEM manual it clearly states you need to replace the two Orings on the double bearing box. I had said you didn't need any seals and that was wrong.

It also states on the same page of the OEM manual to use Permatex #3 and it goes on to mention using a locktight on the 4 bolts that hold the ring.

Hope it goes together well for you.:)

Yes, I knew those issues. I'm just debating over the use of Permatex 2 or 3.

The job is complete. I'm ready for the lake after I fill the lower unit up with oil. Thanks to all that helped me. It was quite the learning experience.
