Camera wizard suddenly decided to disappear, nothing happens when plug in camera card. Cd auto play works. Googled the problem and tried fixes I was comfortable with. No help. Other suggested fixes involve making changes to the registry that I am not sure I am really ready to do.

Any suggestions?

Re: XP camera wizard

I'm assuming asside from the camera wizard not working the card is no longer "seen" as a drive when connected?

If that's the case one easy thing to try is a different USB port. That works for me sometimes. Another thing is to try the card in another computer. Make sure the card is properly "dismounted" before you unplug it. Then try it in your computer again.

Not only can you damage your data by not removing it properly it can leave the card is an unreadable state.

Card plugs straight into slot on pc. Tried cards from 2 other camers in different slots, none of them will work. If you try to open camera wizard manually, scanner is only thing that shows up.

Aah ok, you have a built-in card reader. Sounds like that's the problem. You may need to install/reinstall the drivers for that device(s). Take a peek in the device manager. Unfortunately, many of the computers I've seen with card readers don't actually list the device(s) as a card reader in the device manager.

What's the make/model and operating system of your computer. Maybe I can help locate the drivers.

Re: XP camera wizard

Hmm here's the driver page. I don't see it listed. Im confident this means the system uses "native" windows drivers. The good thing about that is this. Normally you can just remove the device in device manager, reboot, and it will install the drivers (usually with little or no input require from the user). The trick is knowing which device(s) to remove from device manager.

I just happen to have a Compaq Presario sitting next to me (I'm fixing it for a friend). The card reader is a USB device. It connects to the motherboard via a round grey cable (just like the USB ports on the front do).

I can't get much more info from this system because no operating system is installed at the moment (wating for a factory restore disc).

A couple things come to mind. Do you have any other USB devices connected. Printer, thumb drive, etc... That would tell you if no usb device will work or if it's just the card reader. If no USB device will work, you can try removing and reinstalling the USB controller itself. If not, it would appear the problem is with the card reader. There's still the problem of identifying which device the card reader is.

You may be able to deduce that information by taking a written inventory of the devices listed under USB. Then shut down the computer and unplug the card reader from the motherboard. When you restart the computer and go back into the device manager you'll probably see one or two things. There will be some exclamation points on some devices under USB or you'll just have devices that dissapeared.

If you want to agressively attack the problem you can just delete the whole USB "tree" and reboot. You MAY be required to reinstall drivers for any other USB conneted drivers after you do that (printers, scanner, web cam, etc...).

Re: XP camera wizard

Thanks for the help.
All other USB devices (scanner, printer, wireless) connected work fine. Don't know that I am really ready to "aggressively attack the problem".
Friend suggested that I just buy a plug in USB multi card reader. Seems like a cheap fix if it would cure the problem, or do the external card readers use the built in Camera Wizard?
Looked at a few, didn't really say if they came with the software.

Talk slow and use small words, I'll try to keep up.

Thanks

Dave

Thanks i386

Unplugged card reader and restarted like you suggested. Only thing that was gone from device manager list was "unknown device" under "Universal Serial Buss Controllers". Plugged back in and R/S, was back as "unknown device".
USB port on reader works, nothing else does.
Since it's a HP brand reader and click on properties for it shows "unknown device", leads me to suspect card reader is bad.

Right or wrong?

Unknown device means Windows doesn't know what it is and has no driver loaded for it. Try deleting the unknown device from the device manager and reboot.

Re: XP camera wizard

You have three options; A) find the correct driver for the USB device (Manufacturer may be able to provide one), B) buy a new USB card reader, or C) roll the dice and try a windows reinstall and hope it works again after the reload.

Based on what you are telling us about your comfort level working on computers, Option B would be your best bet: USB card readers are dirt cheap, just go pick up a new one man.

Newegg has them from $8 and up.

Option B it is. I see you recognize my computer trouble shooting skill level.
