Re: 1968 Holiday Restoration w/pics

Ok,, so I started to paint my hull and it looks like i need to be more thorough in my prep cause the blister happened again in my top coat. What else could it be.

So went ahead and sanded the blister and degreased it with acetone.

Resprayed to match.

For now thats it,, I will post pics tomorrow of how the whole thing came out. Man this preping and sanding and painting is not easy if u dont know what ur doing.

SO here it is, full blow rustoleum white sprayed.

I have been so focused and reading on painting and so on and so on. I can tell you this,,, this is phase one. Notice the orange peel.

MAH004833.jpg

I plan on color sanding and see how the ending will be.

I did experiment and noticed that u get alot of orange peel if u dont thin your rustoleum. So i thinned it 5% then 10% and then 30% and now will try 50%. The more I thined the better it sprayed, but u have to be careful of the runs. So patience is a virtue. My plan is to spray 2 coats & then sand with a 600 or 1000 in between coats. The final will sand all the way up to 2000 and then buff, polish and then wax.

By the way i have no fingerprints.

I never would of known that wet sanding could be so therapeutic. It was 102 outside but my garage had the floor wet and i was wet myself, so i was wet & wild in there.

I went ahead & wet sanded again with 1000 grit. Didnt sand all the orange peel just a light sand. Will recoat again next weekend, I think the 5th & 6th coat then sand again.

Its hard to show the shine, need a good angle.

You've got way more patience than I do. My paint job won't get near that level of dedication! But I bet you'll be rewarded in the end.

Patience you say? What i do is open my garage in the mornings (weekends) and work on my tin through out the day. One hour here and hour there, i dont get bored and i recoop intrest and energy. But for somwething like this i just pace and plan myself. I dont know if u guys do this but i watch the fishing channels in between my breaks.;) The fish they catch just motivates to get out there. SOme psychology huh.

The fishing channel breaks seem to be working to keep you motivated as you're still at it. The paint job looks great...

I framed, drywalled and painted my basement and it turned out better than I could have paid someone to do it...but I would have gone broke trying to make money at it. I was super thorough...but slow as hell.

Any more wet and wild and you may have to close the door! :D

Slow, steady and good work.

Ok the final week end of spraying white. After this i will mask tape to spray the royal blue rustoleum. Im starting to love the rustoleum. One thing i learned is the more you thin the paint the less orange peel u get, but dont overdo it. Like i said in the past, i tried 5% then 10% and then 30% and finally 50%! Well 50% is no good. Paint was running all over the place, it was a marathon.

The vid belows shows how fast I had to spray to avoid the runs.

I got less orange peel, no doubt about that.

I went back to 30% thinning with clear mineral spirits.
