The starter had an issue a few weeks ago so I lubed the bendix shaft. Today it worked fine all afternoon then it wouldn't engage with the flywheel. Can they become siezed to the shaft? Does the entire assembly on the shaft including the collar with the dog ears slide up the shaft when starting?

Hi,

The whole piece rotates up into the flywheel on that starter.
Did you oil the spline on the starter shaft? They we pretty fool proof.
Does your starter spin real fast? It needs to start up fast to allow the bendix to move up the shaft to engage the flywheel ring gear.

Yes, the shaft was lubed the first time it acted up and it worked fine until recently. The battery spins it fast. I can't even pull it up the shaft.

Hi,

You have to turn it up the shaft. Try a channel loc on it or tap it with
a little hammer.

A little prying and up it popped. It must have slamed down hard and tightened against the shaft shoulder like a nut. Works fine now.

Take it to a local auto electric shop (starter & alternator rebuilder). A marine shop will cost you twice as much.

The electric starter is fixed, now I'm trying to get the recoil starter reassembled.
