Re: Bayliner Fuel Tank Wiring Question.?

Most aluminum fuel tanks have 3 connections.

1. fuel sender sense wire. (the one on the center round flange for the float) This goes to the fuel gauge.

2. fuel sender ground. A wire from one of the screws on the round fuel float flane. Goes to ground.

3. Ground tab. There is usually a tab welded tot he tank that is for grounding the tank to the electrical system of the boat and to the metal fuel filler neck. This prevent the big boom sound when you fill up at the gas station.

A firecracker, you need to get out more, that would be a BOOMER:eek:

You know, the homemade kind that your drunk buddy blows his foot off with.

If the one that is screwed to the wood floor is the grounding wire it wont do its job if connected to wood.

What If The Tank Is Plastic? How Do You Ground This System?

Ayuh,... The same as a Metal tank,...

As noted, the 3 wires are the sender to gauge wire,... pink I think....
Then the Ground wire for the gauge, which should be black, running from the sender body to the bonding tab/ wire, or to battery ground...
And of course, the Bonding wire, which is another way of Grounding the system, it's usually green,+ should go to the motor's block...

If the tank is plastic it still gets a ground? I understand the sender singal and sender ground. My metal tank then has the third tank ground as metioned before, but do they really ground a plastic tank?

Re: Bayliner Fuel Tank Wiring Question.?

The screws that mount the sender to a plastic tank screw into metal nuts that are captured in the plastic around the sender mouting hole. the two ground wires (actually one ground and one bonding) can attach to the same screw and perform the same function as in a metal tank although the metal tank may have the bonding tab attached directly to the tank instead of the sender body. The net result is the same. Apparently you've never read the warnings on the gas pump at your local gas station. There is normally a warning about not filling plastic tanks in a vehicle. Why? It's called static build up. Plastic, whether it is a hair comb, seat cover, or a fuel tank is an excellent storage facility for static electricity. Touch it with a fuel nozzle and you get that nasty "kaboom" sound followed by intense "heat". The filler nozzle on the boat should be bonded as well.

Just as an aside, if you ever get a tour of a high tech electronics manufacturing area you will notice the intense measures that are taken to control static electricity. In that environment, a static discharge can destroy electronic components.
