what is my out drive?

ok i have a 1988 baja 170 sunsport. just put a new 4.3 in boat due to broken crank. boy did that suck. dont have a camera to take a picture of the out drive but can someone help me figure it out. any info would be more that i have now.

Well, what color is it?
what is the basic shape? Describe as best you can. Squared, rounded, etc.
There should be numbers on it somewhere. Look everywhere, real hard and see if you can find some.

There is Mercruiser, OMC, Volvo. And then various types thereof.
Numbers off of the prop can even be used to tell what make of drive it is.

What color was the old engine? Any markings or stamps on it? My Volvo is stamped on the intake and exhaust manifolds with "VOLVO".

ok after digging through 12 coats of paint i found a plate on left side of upper unit it is a omc. now how hard is it to go through and rebuild. i was wanting to do it just to know it is done and new also. dont feel like drinking 2 coolers of beer again waiting on a tow.

Issue with OMC is parts. Most are doing well just to keep it going. Lotsa parts available, lotsa parts NLA (no longer available). From what's been happenening here on the forum, EBAY is your best friend...if it's running and you are not attached to that boat sell it now while it's working, buy Merc or Volvo Power...

Being its an 88 model boat most likely its a OMC Cobra drive.
Parts are still out there but if its working i would leave it alone.
Change the gear lube,service the u-joints,grease the gimbal bearing,check the bellows and run it.
