I have a few screw holes in my transom of my fiberglass bayliner, from the old depth finder speedo, and transducer that I removed. How should I fix them? for now so I can get it back on the water can I just use a new screw gooped up with silicone or will there be a chance that water will leak past the silicone into the wood.

Re: fiberglass fix

I like 3M 5200 marine sealant, its permanent ( but I can always get it out anyway). Work some into the hole, apply to screw threads, insert screw and wipe away excess, let it cure a couple days. Buy 3M 5200 at home depot.
I use it on all thru hulls above and below waterline.

Sillycone is not good in a boat, great for fishtanks.... definately never below the waterline. Its weak as old jello and attracts dirt like kids.

For what its worth, I've had pretty good luck with the Marine Tex putty... It is catalyzed and it kicks off fairly quickly, but I think that you still have to let it cure out for 20 hours or so depending on heat etc. If you have a cosmetic side on a through hole, you can tape over that side and putty from the other... should end up with a nice even surface...

Re: fiberglass fix

Can I use gel from a gelcoat repair kit for the screw holes? I'm assuming that this would be ok below the waterline.
