Great forum. I unloaded my boat in the water and cranked the engine, it ran great for about 30 sec. then it cut off and would not start back up. I checked the spark plugs and they were both fireing and it seems to be getting fuel. What in the world could be the problem here? I would greatly appreciate any help with this issue. (fishing trip was absolutely ruined)

Re: 1983 Johnson 60hp want start

you need to start with the basics of trouble shooting. compression check, and spark check with tester ($10 auto parts). compression should be above 100psi and within 10% of each other. spark should jump 1/2" gap.

if these meet the criteria, look at the carbs and fuel delivery. read ethanol and carb cleaning here >>>http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=299680

welcome to iboats--ditto tashasdaddy--after compression check and spark check you may find it is fuel delivery issue--going by running good and then cut out

Thanks for all of yalls help. The compression was good so i checked the spark again, it seemed a little weak so i pulled the fly wheel and sure enough the key was sheared. I also cleaned the carbs and changed the fuel lines. The bottom carb was full of trash & debris. What size is the fly wheel key? I wouldn't think i would have a hard time finding this item.
