I picked up a Boat the other day and I'm going to get it tomm, it has a 1970's Johnson 135 "V" 4 on it. We need to remove the engine before moving the boat and want to know the best way to unhook the wiring from the engine ??

also were these pretty good engines?? The one cylinder head is off and the engine spins but not sure whats wrong with it...

V-4's are great.

You will have to disconnect a large plug and the cables...... some wires will have to be wrapped around the engine while others stay with the boat.

Why the dismount? It weighs over 325 and is top heavy.

Well the boat has a weak Transom board I don't want to damage the boat...

I think the engine is over kill for the boat but maybe i will look into the problem with it..

Honestly, it may be easier to brace the engine with straps and 2x4's for you trip

WOW if the transom is that poor..... you can make that call.

it's an aluminum boat and it moves some but not a lot, I just don't want to take a chance in cracking the Transom..

I could strap it but how would you use the 2x4's ??

Bunky, if you have not moved the boat by now, consider trailering the boat with the engine in the "down" position with the lock mechanism "off" thereby lessening some of the torque on the transom if you drive over any bumps in the road on your way home, also make sure that you have secured the boat really "tight" on the trailer so that the boat and trailer will move as one while on the road. You don't want the boat to rebounding up and down on the trailer while travelling. Good luck!

Re: 135 Hp V-4

Why all the fuss over this? Except for the weight, it is not hard to remove the motor. It's going to have to come off anyway if you expect to work on the transom.

If you will give a model number so we know exactly what we are working on, I can give you step-by-step for removing it.

Better yet, send me a PM when you get the number so I don't miss it--I don't read all the questions any more.

Re: 135 Hp V-4

Well I got the motor 135 ESL73M off there was just a couple of plugs to unhook and then the cables and the connector for the power trim, I brought it home and put the engine on a stand and got to looking it over someone has removed the starboard side head for some reason and all the spark plugs are out of it..

I don't really see any problems I will the pistons look good and they move alright the engine seems to turn over harder then I think it should will have to find some head bolts and see if It has compression, The owner says it was complete and ran when he parked it there...
